( Like she'd let him sneak away ) open_flame April 15 2010, 14:47:27 UTC
She was staring at the ceiling, again. There was something oddly normal about sitting in silence, and she loved feeling normal, even if for only small moments at a time.

There were quite footsteps outside her door were coupled with indistinct murmurs. More than likely those of the black suited FBI agents chatting about this mission or that mission. This was fine with her. Anyone who knew Liz was well aware she was prone to ups and downs, and today was one that was more down than up.

When the louder footsteps outside her door paused, she immediately knew who was there. She sat up and waited for that familiar knock of his, but it didn't come. She pursed her lips and stared at the door for a few second before rising up to pull the door open. Why wasn't he knocking?

Instantly her eyes fell on the small box at her feet. She felt her skin prickle up in goosebumps as she bent down to scoop up the box. A smile spread across her lip as she flipped the box over a in hands while she looked down the hall at Hellboy.

"You weren't even gonna stick around to see if I like it?" She called in that tone of voice she thought sounded very confident, but everyone who could hear know was all for show. She was nervous.

It was worth a try xD callmebigred April 15 2010, 18:28:43 UTC
Red heard a very familiar voice call his name and he stopped just short of the end of the hallway, wincing and cursing himself for not getting away fast enough. He was nervous, awkward and unsure really of how to act around her at times. It wasn't that she made him nervous, but he always felt like an idiot when he talked. But she was one of the few people in the BPRD who really understood him, and that was a connection that he appreciated on many levels.

He turned slowly, giving her a sheepish grin as he slowly began walking back towards her. "Didn't know if you were in. I didn't want to bother you if you were sleepin'." A lie, but a plausible one. He scratched at his jaw anxiously as she stopped just a few feet away from her. "It's not much, so don't go gettin' all excited over it. I just wanted to say, well, y'know..." There was a small pause and he smiled softly. "Well, happy birthday. I told Abe to come by and wish you one too, but you know how he gets caught up in those damn books."

"I wasn't sleeping." She shook her head and continued to look at the box in her hands. The ribbon was too long, and she felt compelled to coil the extra around the tip of her finger. Her voice was barely a whisper as she spoke. "I was just thinking."

The truth was she was wishing for a nice quite birthday. She didn't like being the center of attention. She knew however, that when they took the time to throw a party for her, it wasn't really for her, it was more for some sense of normalcy, and she liked that. She liked the idea that at it's core, BPRD was just a...job.

For some of them.

"Thank you, for this. I mean...yeah." She ignored the passing glances of the agents that passed by her and Red. Some of the newer agents craned their heads to see what what happening, but those who had been there longer better than to pry, and just kept walking.

"You want me to open it now?" Liz raised her head to look Red in the eyes. Direct eye contact made her uncomfortable with most, but not with him. It made her feel special, like she was important. "Or should we wait, see if Abe comes by?"
