A New Hope Commentary
I rewatched the OT on my VHS (so there’s no executive meddling). Here’s my commentary:
A New Hope
-Opening scene! I wonder if Leia killed that stormtrooper, or just stunned him?
-Obi-Wan’s memory is going with old age: he stopped calling himself Obi-Wan after Luke was born, not before.
-Anakin was a cunning warrior? What an understatement.
-Hearing Obi-Wan talk about the qualities of a lightsaber reminded me of RotS when he killed Grievous with a blaster. LOL.
-And now Luke’s Aunt and Uncle are dead, so he can go with Obi-Wan. How convenient. I’m just kidding, I’m not a droid. It’s a very tragic, plot driven death scene. ;)
-Leia’s a badass who withstands torture!
-….Threepio is kind of a racist…. I feel like, as a protocol droid, he should be accepting of all alien species.
-Ew, the red-eyed alien creeps me out.
-The band in the cantina scene reminds me of the Family Guy parody: “Okay, any requests? Play that same song!”
-Aqualish! My friend calls them butt-faced aliens.
-That dude only dislikes Luke because he’s prettier than him.
-There shouldn’t have been blood on that arm, the lightsaber should have cauterized the wound. Cool shot though.
-OMG the look that Ben and Luke give Han after he makes that parsec comment is priceless. Maybe they were thinking “a parsec is a unit of distance… should we tell him?”
-I wonder if Ben was going to make Bail pay Han when they reached Alderaan? LOL
-HA! Yay for original VHS! In MY version Han shoots first!
-I love that Han shoots a man dead and no one does anything. That’s my kind of bar.
-I can’t look at Tarkin now without thinking about him and Daala. Icky.
-LOL Threepio is so mean to R2. It’s okay, I like you!
-I could slap Luke for saying such things about the Millenium Falcon.
-Luke is endearingly annoying as Han is trying to escape the imperials.
-I wonder if the citizens of Alderaan realized what was happening or if they were just… gone? Ben’s comment about hearing their screams disturbed me.
-Did that laser shoot Luke in the butt…? LMAO
-Tarkin’s shock at Leia’s deception is hilarious, since he lied to her too! And about something much more important.
-I love Luke, but he’s so bossy. SHUT UP LUKE YOU’RE NOT HELPING!
-A presence Vader has not sensed since… Obi-Wan literally fried his butt in battle. LOL.
-“Who’s the more foolish - the fool or the fool who follows him?”
-I want to be a stormtrooper. Is that bad?
-Luke trusts so quickly. “Ben is a great mean”? He hardly knows him!
-I love that Han doesn’t want to rescue Leia. :D If only he knew.
-LMAO at Luke trying to bind Chewie. Also, Han talking on the comlink.
-How does Leia know that Ben Kenobi is Obi-Wan Kenobi? She asked for Obi-Wan on the message, and then got excited when Luke said he was with Ben Kenobi. Sure the last name is the same, but that doesn’t mean anything.
-By the timeline, Obi-Wan should only be around 54. Alec looks so much older. Stress?
-Someone needs to give GL a color palette, what’s with all the white and tan?
-I love that, when they’re in the garbage, everybody is shouting at each other. That’s gonna help. How did the serpent get down there?
-Also, shouting someone’s name isn’t going to magically save them. I’m looking at you Leia.
-LOL all I can say about this whole thing: Worst. Rescue. Ever. Well, it’s tied with Han’s rescue in RotJ. ;) It’s giving me flashbacks to the hilarity that is The Emperor’s New Groove. “I’m kind of new to this whole rescuing thing, but this, to me, would be considered a step backwards, wouldn’tcha say?”
-Threepio is so clever. I love it when he plays the victim for the stormtroopers.
-What is in Han’s hand when he’s trying to get Leia on top of the garbage? It looks like a belt.
-Wow Carrie’s tiny waist. I can’t believe she had to lose weight for this film.
-Good job Han, you got one! Mebbe charging headfirst wasn’t entirely stupid. Then again, maybe it was.
-Had I been a trooper on the other side of that door I would have crouched down and shot Luke and Leia through the tiny opening before they could escape.
-….Why did Obi-Wan twirl in that fight?
-I wonder what Obi-Wan meant about becoming more powerful? Because really he didn’t. Sure he can communicate with Luke via the force, but he could do that with a comlink too. Maybe he foresaw the impact his death would have on Luke? Hoping that Luke would see Vader as evil incarnate? That would also explain the little smile he had when he saw Luke through the glass.
-It bothers me how Leia just lost everyone she loves and yet she’s comforting Luke, who seems more torn up about losing Ben than his Aunt and Uncle. This is one of the very few things in the OT that I find sexist. Leia is the "other," her emotions are less significant than Luke’s because she’s a woman.
-“I care.” LOL Luke is so adorable.
-I love that the Chubby guy is named Porkins.
-Han Solo to the rescue! What’s that? A Joe Average is totally saving the day and making it possible to destroy the death star??!! Brin would be shocked. Maybe he missed this scene.
-Han and Luke are besties.
-Mark doesn’t look quite as good in his gun holster as Harrison. ;)
-I love Leia’s hair in this last scene. It should have been like that throughout the whole movie.
