Saturday Night Buffet
On the way we listen to some
Music in the van
Dad pops in a CD and we
Hear some great Chopin.
He remarks importantly,
“His etudes are the best,
Maybe you should try and
Put your fingers to the test.”
I step out of our car and see
A large, bright yellow Jeep
Whose owners glared at me as if their
Hatred ran real deep.
The freezing, icy atmosphere
Was welcoming in ways,
I deeply hoped this would not change,
Maybe there’d be snow days.
We walk into the restaurant as
A tall man stood outside
He smoked his cigarette away
Loud coughs I could not hide.
Mom notices the long line
Behind the register
While Dad’s loud voice complains about
Some ancient sports posters.
I notice at a quick glance that
This place today was packed
On top of heavy plates and bowls
The calories were stacked.
People of all ages,
And shapes and sizes too
Flocked from everywhere I saw
With fatty foods to chew.
Of course, I had expected
Such a large crowd on this day
After all, it was, you see,
A night on Saturday.
We pay our fee and stroll over
To one of few free tables
I get up to retrieve my drink
Then notice some food labels.
Now, certain buffets serve breakfast
From 8am to 10,
But I was sure that right now it was
Much past those times then.
Setting down my drink, I start to
Walk towards the plates
And reading words above the food
I notice they seem late.
Above the Caesar salad
The word reads, “cereal,”
And there was food right next to it
That looked bacterial.
The labels of the food seemed pretty
Interesting, you see
The cantaloupe tray said a word,
“Donuts” I saw with glee.
Finishing my second plate,
My stomach is now bulging
But now in some warm brownie-cake
I quickly start indulging.
The child crawling nearest me smears
Food into my hair
He’s lucky that he’s cute, or else
I’d hit him in my chair.
I notice all the others who are all
Stuffing their full faces
And next to me a child trips
With long untied shoelaces.
The belts of everyone I see
Are stretching very far
The night is drawing to an end
We step into our car.
Outside the snow falls lightly
As we head into Sam’s Club
Mom says we need pastrami
To make delicious subs.
I wheel and run around the store
While Mom picks out some bread
And Dad sees how high I can jump
Seems like my shoes are lead.
Loading up our minivan with
Milk, some bread, and meat
I climb inside and shiver in the
Soft and cold car seat.
At home Callie is greeting us
With one of Dad’s shoes gone
“I’m guessing Callie took it,”
Mom tells us with a yawn.
Don’t blame her, I’m tired too,
It’s been a boring night.
I had to write a poem since
It just seemed so right.
I know it’s only 10:30, oh well,
I’m not really caring
So I hope you enjoyed this lovely
Poem that I’m sharing.
Good night to all (which means that’s you,
Choo Choo), reading this
I’ll bid farewell since there are some
Dreams I won’t want to miss.
