You Save Me
There was no denying the fact that when Christian Kane first came to LA he was a wild one, guess you could say he’d been swept away by the glitz and glamour, and it always ended badly.
Back then, it was about how hard he could push himself, how far he could go and excess. There was no such thing as slow, no such thing as taking the sensible road. As much as he loved it there were moments, moments that had the world leaving him behind - broken and aching - as it just kept going.
He didn’t have anyone to tell him to stop, nobody to tell him when enough was enough and nobody to stay with him when everything got to be too much and he ached for a simple gesture from somebody - anybody.
Things just kept on escalating and eventually he hit a brick wall, one that left him an empty shell of a person, somebody that didn’t allow himself to feel anything past his own selfish desires because it was easier and it meant he stood no chance of getting hurt.
A couple broken hearts shouldn’t mean a thing, right? Well, you’d be wrong.
They meant the world and the difference between the bright-eyed young Christian Kane that made his way to LA looking for his big break and the older wiser man now stood beside Steve Carlson, singing his heart and soul out for the crowds.
Things had changed for Chris the day he’d met Steve, like the world had decided to give him his second chance. Steve was one of those strong people he’d read about in books, had weathered God only knows how many storms and come out stronger for them. Steve was talented - beyond talented - he could take to any instrument and play it as if he’d been playing it for years and he never stopped surprising Chris.
The most surprising thing about Steve was how he never backed down and he wasn’t afraid of Chris, even when he was angry and throwing punches, Steve stood steady and talked Chris back down from wherever he had gone.
Chris had never had anyone like Steve in his life before and now that he had, he spent a lot of his time worrying that he would be snatched away from him right before his eyes. It wasn’t like it hadn’t happened before, but Steve was Steve, and he’d do something as simple as ruffle Chris’ hair or nudge his shoulder whenever Chris got a particular look in his eye.
Steve had never asked and he’d never needed to, it was like he knew. Guess that was how well he had come to know Chris, that he could look at the other man and know what he was thinking or guess what he wasn’t saying.
A lot of the time Steve scared Chris.
He was too perfect and sure he’d fucked up a couple times and told Chris about them, but Steve was like the sun and if Chris looked too long then he found himself blinded, and that was really fucking frightening. It was ridiculous how safe and how grounded Steve could make him feel and how out of control he got whenever Steve had to go and tour alone, the mornings after the nights before were never pretty.
But Steve always came back and that never failed to shock the hell out of Chris, he was always waiting for Steve to pick up and move on, just like everybody else, but he never did. As soon as Steve swung back into town he’d call Chris and it wouldn’t matter what time of morning it was they’d talk for hours about everything or nothing at all.
When they made music, it was like every problem Chris had ever had just didn’t matter anymore and he could lose himself in the pure expression, it was safe to be who he was and he didn’t need to hide behind a mask. It was exhilarating and some days he’d wake up from a nightmare that had all of what he had stripped away from him, but then Steve would call and everything was right in the world again.
Years past and no matter what happened, no matter how crazy Chris got Steve was there and standing beside him like nothing had changed. He helped see Chris through bad breakups, family crises, poor health, stressful working conditions and stupid things like getting so drunk that he couldn’t stand up straight.
Steve was constant and Chris wasn’t even sure how he’d managed without him in his life, how he’d been a whole person without Steve and how he’d managed to get through a day without a text or a call from the other man. Not that Chris was the sort of friend to take and take, he gave back as good as he got. He encouraged Steve to pursue his dreams, helped him through the rough times and the good times, and always made sure that whenever Steve visited he always had fun and he never had to worry about anything.
Chris had always been good with people, most everyone loved him, but no one got him like Steve. Maybe it was the time they spent together on the road when touring or in the recording studio, but there was a connection and it had been there from the very start. One look was all it took and everything that needed to be said had been said and sure it was weird and like nothing Chris had ever had but it was something he couldn’t live without.
He had always had this rule and that was: you never fall in love with your friends, but with Steve it was easy - too easy. And Chris hadn’t wanted to feel the way he did. Didn’t want his heart to skip a beat every time Steve slung his arm around his neck and turned into him, whispering about something that half the time Chris didn’t even hear because he was too busy noticing how good Steve smelt.
Not that he had ever thought there was a chance, not for them.
Steve was Steve and he deserved so much better, but one New Year’s Eve Steve surprised him by finding him at midnight and kissing him as if he’d been made to do just that. Chris had been stunned at first, unable to respond, but as the seconds turned into minutes he finally kissed back, letting the old year blur in with the new where the relationship had taken its first step towards being something more.
Not that a lot changed, they were still the same people as they had been, but now they could kiss and have sex and lie in bed all day with a good excuse.
For Chris it was a chance at something better. Steve had proved with ten or more years of friendship that he wasn’t going anywhere so Chris trusted him with his heart, letting him in like he had and would never let anyone else. Steve just loved Chris, held him close and reassured him at every corner that he was never going to leave him, not now that he had him.
Little did Steve know but he had always been Christian Kane’s saving grace and would be for a long time to come, for as long as he wanted Chris.
