Ok so let me preface this by saying that I love Jason Statham. Since Lock, Stock I've tried to see the films he's in. Sometimes they're great (Snatch) sometimes... not so much (Transporter 2). He's been typecasted into this smartass action guy role recently but hell, he does it well.
This is definitely one of those "suspend your disbelief" kind of movies. It's supposed to be fun and action filled, not win an oscar. So ignore the impossibility of some thugs injecting him with a slow acting poison instead of just shooting him in his sleep (also, if you're a hitman I'm pretty sure you'd wake up the instant you heard any kind of noise). But moving on...
I loved the visual style of this film. Great edits, random subtitles and just an overall fun feeling. It was hectic and the music (omg the music was amazing!) and cuts really enhanced it. The dialogue was great for the most part (ignoring some of the obvious cheese moments) and it was just so ridiculous you couldn't not enjoy it.
I have to restate though, the music really really suited the film. Each track was something you'd probably heard before somewhere but they fit the scenes so perfectly that you're reminded of the film when you hear the song again. It's rare to see that in movies, other than the Tarantino/Ritchie films (which stand out for me music wise).
Some of my favourite moments... when he injects himself with the full thing of adrenalin and just comes out of the elevator screaming his brains out... omg, I could not stop laughing at that part. Him standing on the running motorcycle. Umm... doing his gf in public though that initially started off really badly and looked like the beginning of a rape... yeah that part wasn't cool but then she was suddenly into it. I won't psychoanalyze that too much though.
While obviously the film couldn't end any other way than with his death I love the little eye flicker at the end, just to keep you on your toes.
So overall, while the film could definitely be called cheesy, I had a lot of fun viewing it and even watched it twice. It probably did terribly at the box office and won't do so well with dvd sales but it may also end up having a cult following. Who knows.
So rent it. There are worse ways to spend $5.
