Streaming Video Fail

So, as a lot of you know, my wife is having a baby soon. By soon, I mean she's full term, so literally any day now.

Now, I consider myself a fairly modern, tech-savvy kind of guy. I've got a Twitter account and a Facebook account. I listen to tech podcasts. Heck, I've even got a blog (though admittedly I don't post very often).

So, given that a lot ( Read more... )

With Ustream, is it possible to set up your show and password protect it ahead of time, and then just start the video from the iphone?

(Not sure what the etiquette is on addressing people by their real names on LJ, so I'll use your screen names.)

Ladykalessia, they do have an iPhone client, as a matter of fact, and one of the screen shots looks like it's recording (despite the fact that the short description implies that it's a viewer only), so I'll give that a go.

Waywardbound, that's exactly what I did. Works like a charm for the live stream, but if I then want to save the video (which of course I do), that saved video is immediately viewable by everyone in the world. Idiotic, but true. Go to my profile page at http://www.ustream.tv/user/TheBelgian and click on the "Archived Videos" tab on the right and you'll see something that I just recorded "live" with the iPhone as part of a password-protected show.

Screen names = Win. :)

JustinTV is what the DNA is using to stream their live shows these days, since the RealServer crapped out, and well, nobody supports RealMedia anymore.

After looking more closely, JustinTV's iPhone client seems to be view-only, not record. So, as mentioned in reply to WaywardBound's message, I'm going with Qik.

You should email Ustream and report that as a bug. If it's recorded under password, it should only ever be available under password. Otherwise, they're risking lawsuit over privacy issues.

Search LinkedIn for 2nd degree connections to current employees. If you don't have any, it looks like I might have a decent one.

Thanks, I already submitted the "bug" via their Web site. Their response:

"Correct, you cannot password protect a recording. You can only set it to PRIVATE so that only friends can view it."

My reply (to which I've heard not a peep since):

"But this seems wrong. Why should saving a broadcast change it from private (password-protected) to public? This seems like a serious security issue.

"Perhaps there's a way to set the default privacy of saved videos to Friends Only instead of Public?"

Anyway, I've decided to just go with Qik and give everyone my password. It seems the more reliable of the 2, and is way less confusing than Ustream.
