How Things Have Been Going Here...Good and Bad.

Well, things have mostly been going well. I graduated from 6 months' worth of training class at the US Department of Veterans' Affairs today for the GS-7 position of Veterans' Life Insurance Specialist. The training was rigorous (which was one reason why I postponed my next shot at the Pennsylvania Bar Exam until February of next year) but it was worth it.

My position involves administering policies for veterans who bought life insurance directly from the US Gov't/VA. The VA sold what is now VGLI insurance directly to veterans after discharge up until 1965, when it was subcontracted to Prudential Life under VA oversight for all except high-risk policies only available to vets with a disability rating of over 70% after discharge. (I.E.: We are only directly underwriting life insurance for diabled veterans at this time) I do customer service, general underwriting, and policy maintenance of all sorts for veterans with these policies by phone and mail contact. So far, it seems to be a pretty rewarding and interesting job.

Also, something rather sad and unexpected happened to Gail and I on the 15th of July; and I'm just able to bring myself to write about it now. Our older ginger tabby tomcat, Felix, grew very sick early that afternoon with breathing difficulties after having recently had a check at the vet with a clean bill of health (he was seven). He began having trouble breathing, but before we could get him to the vet on an emergency call, he abruptly died in front of us on his favorite quilt. :-(

The vet later thought that maybe there was some congential pulmonary problem that had gone undetected. The shocking thing was that, earlier that morning before his breathing difficulties, Felix had made one of his playful dashes out of the apartment to chase a large fly in the common laundry room. The vet offered to autopsy him, but we decided not to.

Our younger cat, Scrappy, a now 2-year old female calico, was recently checked out as well, and nothing has been found wrong with her. She is fine, but has been looking about for Felix every now and then. She used to love jumping on him and play-fighting with him.

Well, I am sure Felix is in a better place. He was a very sweet cat and he will be missed.
