Roll Britannia Review (without pictures)

So, Roll Britannia.

I was a roller derby virgin before today. And now I've been to the (I guess?) European championships. After just one day, I understand the concept, some of the tactics, some of the rules and just how awesome girls on skates in short skirts and fishnets can be. Sadly, I don't have the programme with me, so I'm working off memory at the moment and it's been a long day so the following may need some clarification from the person who kept the programme.

There were four matches on today, after yesterday's heats. First was Birmingham (khaki/black) against Auld Reekie (spelling?) (green, green, more green, some black), which Brum won, though it was a very close match! Then it was Glasgow (blaaaack) against London (pink and black! Seeing a theme here..): Glasgow got rather trounced, losing by over 100 points if memory serves. At that point, redhillian and I went into the Big City to have lunch (at Yo! Sushi in Paddington station, classy) and I'm ashamed to say we didn't get back to Earl's Court until the end of the first half of the third place playoff. We saw the second half though (obviously), along with an impromptu dance-along to Thriller, and Glasgow did very well in another close match to take third place! The final... well... I'd like to say it was a close match. I would. But it really wasn't. At all. Birmingham got absolutely trounced, by about 330 points. They put up a good fight, but the London girls are phenomenal, just brilliant. They're really quite pro, except for the fact that it's not a professional sport and they practice in their spare time.

Makes me a bit jealous really, I would love to be able to do something like this! There are non-skating officials though, I could do that! Just have to find a team that needs a total nutter.

Photos status: Currently uploading the contents of the 4GB CF card to the computer: 1,258 items, roughly 30 minutes. Next up, the contents of the 2GB CF card (if I can convince the computer to see it, stupid thing. May have to do those in the morning. Shall convert the others to workable size), which I reckon to be about 450 or so, so I may have taken about 1,700 rather than the first conservative figure of 1,600: in the space of about three and a half hours, all told. Bloody hell.

tom, photos, review, roller derby, randomness
