Adventures in Management (and other crap)

YEARGH!!!! *pauses* YEARGH!!!! *sigh* Nope, looks like scream therapy isn't working as well as I thought. Of course if I screamed out loud, I'd scare the cats (can't have that).

Started writing this out, then paused to edit significantly (and, my chair broke!).

Basically, I’ve got a peon who has been asked to babysit another project (in addition to her exisiting three), and her initial response was “I can’t do that”. When I explained that there really isn’t anyone else available (hey - she’s the last choice, certainly not the first), she went to one of my co-managers, and whined about how she’s so overworked (just an aside: for her job title, she’s got an extremely light workload).

Then, she wrote a whining e-mail to my co-manager’s boss, complaining about her workload and provided lots of unnecessary details about her personal life to explain why she absolutely can’t do this (but volunteered her friend to do it instead). Of course the whining e-mail was forwarded to me and my boss, and we’re seething. Especially about how she volunteers this other person, who’s having enough problems keeping her own head above water!

Worst-case scenario, as I told my boss, I’ll take the project (along with the other crap I do!), but this peon certainly isn’t showing her value to the company right now. If she leaves we can’t replace her, and right now that doesn’t seem to be a problem. *grrr*

In other news, I accidentally ended up fostering two kittens, and I’ve scheduled their spay/neuter surgeries for tomorrow. What’s the weather forecast? Only 3-6 inches of snow. Thankfully, the clinic told me to call tomorrow morning to find out whether they’ll be open or not. I really want to get these furballs fixed and tested so I can get them adopted into a home of their own. My own three cats are adapting, but not very happy with me (on the plus side, they now have kibble to nosh on 24/7 because I’m leaving food out for the kittens).

Broke down and bought myself a combo printer/scanner/copier/fax (yeah, who faxes anymore?) for my birthday. I’m gradually scanning my papers so I can file them on the computer and actually *find* things more easily. This is an HP LaserJet 1212nf that came with scanning software (Readiris Pro 11) that *didn’t* recognize the docu-feed! When I contacted the company, their response was: (1) unistall and reinstall the software, and/or (2) contact HP. Now, I’m not a techie, but even I could tell that the problem was with the software, not the machine. Found eDocXL Lite online, and it works just fine. Now, I just need a few months to scan everything ...

My plumber loves me - I think they’re building a shrine to me. Maybe they’ve got a voodoo doll of my house, and they’re poking pins into the pipes? Actually, they do great work, but I’m tired of seeing them so often. First, I replaced my boiler (Oct), then bought a new dishwasher that had to be installed by them instead of the delivery guys (Dec), and then they had to replace the drain in my bathtub (Jan). The boiler is wonderful, the dishwasher is fantastic, and I love the fact that I’m no longer standing in ankle-deep water after a shower, but guys - people are gonna talk!
