People who know me know that I'm a bit critical on donation posts, but I keep it within conversations and not by continuing the drama by posting trivial shit like that on my own livejournal. But said above comment takes this to a different level and with quite a few people strikes a nerve and fits within a narrative that has gained increasing validity.
A fool and his money are soon parted, that's what I often think when I see people asking for donations for the most trivial of things. Someone wants to give, it's their money they can do what they want - but when it starts getting into this almost elitest ego trip of self-serving especially with someone who like it or not carries weight with a large number of people, I am tempted to make a post such as this pointing it out. And really, when you're someone who asks for donations for renovating your kitchen, sending yourself on vacation, or sending a friend to a convention - don't be surprised by the responses you get even if said posts are dressed up as contests or sound cute.
