So, something has come up to remind me of this 2 or 3 times in the last 2 or 3 days. Once, just minutes ago. I'll take that as a sign that I ought to share.
You know how, every now and then, somebody says something to you kind of off the cuff, that ends up being much more profound than they intended?
Well, one year, long long ago, I was at a New Year's party in Pittsburgh, I think before I even moved there. It was at a hotel, and I think Tenzil hosted (I don't remember why). Anyway, it was one of the first times I had a chance to talk with Dirque, for real. And , at one point in the conversation, he made the statement that, if you're an asshole 70% of the time, well that just makes you an asshole.
Now, I'm sure it was just some flip thing, coming up in conversation, and I don't recall it being said in a "Frank, you know you're kind of an asshole" kinda way, but it struck me as a big truth, and I still use it to this day.
We have to be careful if we wear masks for any reason. If people in general frustrate and annoy you, or you haven't the patience to deal with the day to day in a positive and respectful manner, and you default to 'asshole' to get through the day... well guess what?
So, think about who you think you are, or who you want to be, and make that your default. If somebody is going to make an asshole out of you, make 'em work hard for it! Cause, if you get there too easily, my friend, you just might be an asshole :)
