“Hey, did you know,” came an off-hand comment from two tables down, just as Edward Elric was ordering his third cup of coffee for the morning, “That caffeine can stunt your growth?”

Ed’s spine stiffened and his eyes darkened dangerously at the overheard remark. Anxious to head off any negative attention coming their way as a result of his brother’s screaming, Al blurted out the first thing that came into his mind.

“Ed, he was talking to his friend! It had nothing at all to do with you! Besides! You’re not small! You, uh, you have a big head!”

Seconds after the words were released from his mouth Al wanted to be able to shove them back in.

“WHO ARE YOU CALLING SO SMALL THAT IF HIS HEAD WERE JUST THE TINIEST BIT BIGGER HE’D FLOAT AWAY LIKE A BALLOON?!!”

Ed’s arms were waving furiously, and his face was a dark red that seemed closer to a hue of purple, as he leaned dangerously close to his offender’s face.

Alphonse felt a bolt of sheer panic go through him as curious and irritated stares turned their direction. Closing the distance between them, Al followed through on the second course of action available to him.

He kissed his brother into silence.

Summary: "What makes them disappear when we touch them?"

Once, when he was small, before their mother had died, Al had asked Ed what snow was. At the time it was a rather plausible leap of thought, his young mind wandering from the blanket of white that he and his brother were enjoying to exactly how it had gotten there.

Ed had scrunched up his face at the question, deep in thought for a few moments before answering seriously.

“Snow is bits of frozen clouds, Al. And snowflakes are frozen stars.”

Being the bottomless question pit that he was at that age, Al immediately fired off another query.

“What makes them disappear when we touch them?”

After a bit more consideration, Ed answered him again.

“Because clouds and stars are part of heaven, Al. And we aren’t meant to touch heaven.”

Al never questioned Edward’s opinion that heaven was out of reach, but lying with his older brother comfortably ensconced in his arms he knew that, in this, Edward was wrong.
