Stephen and I are off today for a wonderful weekend getaway to the nearby city of Gwangju. We are going to take in an Imax show of Avatar (already have our tickets), eat western food, check out Kumo world for a wireless network card, and chill in the Windmill's VIP room. Jacuzzi tub? check. Computer with internet? check. Big tv we can hook up to the laptop to watch movies together while we eat icecream in bed? Check. I love Korea. Jacuzzi suite for about 55$ a night? Sold! Wicket is all tucked away at the pet hotel, and I am so primed for relaxation I am floating!
Alas, when we dropped Wicket off at the pet hotel there was an issue. We had refered a freind who was dogsitting some other foreigner's dogs there when she left on vacation. The owner was supposed to be back last month, but had a change of plans. She didn't leave enough money to cover the cost, which is ok because you generally pay the pet hotel when you get back. She wanted the dogs kept in the same kennel cage to try to save on cost. One of the dogs is kind of a bitch (haha) and has been causing some issues by being aggresive with staff and the other dogs -including the dog from her family. She bit the other dog in a fight on a place in her leg that had broken and not treated properly and it fractured the bone again. The contact numbers that the owner gave aren't working for the vet. The vet went ahead and treated the fracture of course, and seperated the dogs into seperate cages, but he is of course concerned. Worried that he can't get a hold of the owner and no doubt also about getting paid. The hotel bill alone would be 600-700$ for the month they would be staying, let alone now the setting of a bone and an xray and so on. Even though it has nothing to really do with me, I still feel stressed out about it. I am pissed off about the lack of thought and care these dogs seem to get (they are transported together in a cat carrier, for example, on buses and trips even though they are nearly as large as Wicket, have no vet records, haven't been housebroken or trained in any way, haven't been socialised, and I've seen the owner turn a blind eye when they were so cold they were shivering and crying - shaved, while all us people were bundled up in coats and blankets). I am pissed because I worry it will make the vet not trust foreigners as much, or that because I brought them in it will effect my relationship with that vet's office (which is great, they even give us a discount on the pet hotel now because they like Wicket). I am also irritated to have to try to track the owner down and try to relay information and so on. I kind of feel like someone should take these dogs and find them homes that are better equipped to look after them. Maybe I am overreacting. Hopefully she will get back to me soon (I tracked her down on facebook), give me a CC so the vet's can get paid for the bone issues, and be able to find another place for the dog that the vets office is having such an issue with. We've watched a lot of dogs in the past, but we are not prepared to take on these two dogs with no proof of shots who aren't house broken, and who fight and are kind of nasty. meh.
