football

Let's look at the last 10 years:

September 2001
"9/11" - a major national disaster

"War" has been going on since then.

August 2005
Katrina - a major coastal disaster

There have been a few hurricanes to hit since then, like Gustav in 2008.

April-July 2010
BP Oil "Spill" - a major Gulf disaster

After 4 decades of losing more than they would win, the Saints not only get TO the Super Bowl, but WIN the Super Bowl.
So, why is it that people who never followed the Saints before get so excited? Why is it that even people like me - who just don't get what it is that is so exciting about football - will find out the score and wear Saints t-shirts? Isn't it obvious? We NEED this. After the last decade of disastrous events there is something to celebrate! Here is a miracle we never thought would happen. "When pigs fly! When Hell freezes over! When the Saints win the Super Bowl!" The New Orleans Saints. OUR team is pulling through. Someone who stands for US and OUR city. We need to be able to come together as a group and celebrate together. When the Saints won against the Vikings to send them to the Super Bowl, the streets were crowded with revelers. Cars cruised with windows open and horns honking and music blaring! People walked the streets with shouts of joy and "high five's" with strangers. EVERYONE had a smile on his face! When people bumped into each other, was there tension? No. There were apologies all around and smiles and it was another reason to share joy with someone else.

Do I care about football?
Nope.
Do I want the Saints to have another winning season?
Yep.
I know it won't last forever, but for now we are still riding this wave of goodwill and joy.

*High Five*
