Author's notes: Thanks to kitty_fic for looking it over for me. This was written for round 7 of daisychain_drab. The topic was supposed to be "sequels," but I'm only a pinch hitter so I don't have a story before this one!

Remus held his cup of tea between his hands, staring out of the window and into the back yard. It was late in the afternoon and the sun shared it’s last rays of light over the grassy headlands. The trees blew in the wind as though they were swaying to a song and the birds chirped. It looked like the war hadn’t even touched their part of the country yet, but it had. Not far away from their home, a house had been burnt down, the occupants killed just for the fun of it. Remus had told Tonks that he wanted to leave, but she wanted to hear nothing of it. It was their home, she argued, and she wouldn’t be forced out it.

It made Remus smile. He married Tonks for her strength and determination and she wasn’t afraid to use it on him as well.

“Thinking again?” Tonks sidled up beside him and kissed his cheek lightly. She slid into the chair next to his and took a hold of the other cup of tea he made. She sipped it, humming in delight. “I do love it when you make me tea.”

Remus slid his hand over hers, squeezing it gently. “We’ll need to leave soon.”

Tonks’ smile turned sad. “I know.”

“You need to go to your mother’s,” he continued, “it’ll be safer there for you.”

“Will it?” Tonks sighed. “Remus...”

Teddy’s cries from the other room made her silent. She stared at Remus for a moment, before moving to rise. It was only when Remus squeezed her hand, that she stopped.

“I’ll get him this time.” Remus stood and walked down the battered old hallway. The paint was peeling from the walls and cracks marred the ceiling, but it was the only home they could afford on one wage.

As soon as he entered his son’s room, Teddy’s red face turned to him, his little fist reaching out towards his dad. It caused Remus to smile. Even on the darkest days, Teddy made it worth the while. Reaching into the crib to pull out his son, he held him against his chest and coo’ed softly.

“It’s okay, Ted, Daddy is here.” Remus sat in the chair near the window and started to rock to and fro. The chair moved with him, swaying gently on it’s curved legs.

“Is he okay?” Tonks was leaning against the doorframe, her smile bright as she watched the scene before her.

“I think he just wanted to be held,” Remus answered, turning his attention back to the little baby in his arms. It was amazing, even now, that Teddy was here and that Remus was holding him. It still felt like a dream.

“I wish I had a camera,” Tonks chuckled as she walked further into the room. “I think he’s going to be a daddy’s boy.”

“Yeah.” Remus’ smile faltered. He hoped that he’d be around long enough to see Teddy grow up.

He didn’t see Tonks leaning down until he felt a kiss on his forehead.

“Everything will be okay, Remus.” It sounded more reassuring than what it should have been for the war they were currently in, but he nodded anyway.

“I want you to go to Andromeda’s house tomorrow morning while I go to Grimmauld Place. Take everything you can and stay there.” He looked up at his beautiful wife. Her hair was blue today, with flecks of red. It was unique, just like her. “Promise me, Tonks.”

If Remus didn’t know her so well, he wouldn’t have heard the slight snort, but she smiled none the less. “I promise.”

The kiss she leaned down to give him was supposed to be reassuring, but it was anything but. He knew Tonks far too well.
