-It is easy to see leadership when it is being acted out before us. It is very easy to critique leadership especially when done poorly. It becomes more [nebulous] when trying to create a definitive definition of leadership, which tries to identify those that are leaders and those that aren’t. Finding what creates good leadership further complicates the discussion. This is challenge most universities have pursued, developing good leaders. Sometimes there are well thought out techniques for developing these leaders with heavily researched strategies, leadership models, and well trained faculty and staff members. Too often, surprisingly this is left to happen as a side consequence, or hoped for in the midst of a some type of mysterious process. [Quote text here about vague processes.]

The most common technique for developing leaders seems to be students practicing leadership, by serving as student leaders on our campuses [citation]. The logic here being that by practicing leadership our students will develop leadership skills and be more fully developed leaders [cite]. While this seems reasonable I would like to suggest that being more strategic about how our students are set up will create the greatest opportunities for our students to develop to their full potential as leaders both now and in the future.

Many of our promising leaders in colleges serve in a variety of leadership roles on our campuses in Residence Life, student government, and service oriented positions.

Social Change Writing:

How does looking at each area of the social change model strengthen my thesis?

-I clearly need to explain the SCM if I am going to make a case for its use. I need to do some comparison with “Servant as Leader” especially. I may want to talk about my speculation about leadership gains in each of the seven areas, or if I am going to narrow that down? Maybe I should connect why each of these seven areas will be significant or valuable to leadership, especially in a Christian context? Do I want to avoid “Christian context” altogether, will this limit my studies value by lowering external validity? I should at least do the summary as is being developed below as a way to understand each area better. I should probably search for more articles that use the SRLS. They will each have confronted a similar issue.

The Social Change Model comprises of/has seven areas of competence/development/outcomes that are measured to look at leadership outcomes/development. The first of these is consciousness of self. The idea of self-awareness is fundamental for anyone [exercising] good leadership because of the need to understand how they relate with others, how they include ~~~ areas of leadership, and their ability to reflect and self assess themselves.
