Last night, John and I heard two owls from inside our house. I've been hearing them a lot lately. I told John that I was going to go outside to try and see them. John declined because he didn't want to disturb them. I said something like, "That's like not wanting to disturb a pigeon."
I got my coat and hiking boots on. I went out through the garage door. I opened it about a third of the way, and crawled underneath. I was trying to keep the garage light pollution to a minimum. Once I stepped outside, the stupid flood light turned on. I forgot about that thing. I crawled back in to turn it off. When I went back outside, I heard the owl, then saw it fly from between my house, and the neighbor's to the north. It mostly glided to the 3 story evergreen across the street. It landed on top. I could see it clearly because the sky was cloudy, and the clouds were lit up. It was an eerie gray color. The owl hooted, then I heard a response from another owl that was to the south. The owl took off again. This time it dipped down, gliding to the north, then disappeared.
I wasn't sure I'd see it, but it was well worth the effort. Even if I didn't actually see it, to hear an owl in the wild is pretty amazing.
