clumsygyrl and I went to see Justin do his thing in San Jose last night, and a sight well worth seeing it was. I got to hear all my favorite songs, and if more of those are from FutureSex/LoveSounds than from 20/20, well, that's just me. The "I Think She Knows" sequence was terrific. Fi and I both agreed that the light show was fantastic - really good use of the whole space inside the venue, not just the stage, and I liked the dancers, especially when they were wearing the suits.
I thought Justin's voice was a little strained at times, particularly when he lingered in falsetto - just sing in your natural range, JT. And the overall sound quality was a little spongy. The stage background projections were eyecatching, but the overall feel was a little cold - so much mechanical/machine imagery, and the repeated use of multiple images of Justin at once felt more self-involved than intriguing to me.
The moving stage bridge was fun, and also struck me as a good way to use more of the rest of the venue space, though as we were up in the very last row, he still didn't get all that close to us. He correctly identified the city he was in, and even went so far as to ask if Oakland and "San Fran" were in the house, which is decent awareness even if the latter caused some eyerolling.
horizon_greene, he did not do the bit you described with the beer. He took a shot from the bar at one point when the bridge had rolled over to the VIP section, but that was it. So perhaps it actually was a one-off move at your show, if not entirely uncalculated.
There were four girls in banana costumes initially sitting near us, who were then brought down to VIP by the pre-show DJ. Sadly, Justin's only comment when he caught sight of them was "I don't get it", in a dismissive tone, which I didn't like. How much would it cost you to give them a laugh and credit for being creative and funny?
Overall, though, it was a fun night, and the best of company. I'm looking forward to the August show already.
