Happy new year!
Here's my
2011 fic roundup.
Last year I wrote two stories over a thousand words and seven ficlets under a thousand words.
-
get up and go (bandom, Frank Iero/Gerard Way, 350 words)
-
keep playing that song (bandom, Pete Wentz/Travie McCoy, 220 words)
-
lullaby (bandom, Ryan Ross & Brendon Urie, 100 words)
-
so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen (baseball RPF, Carlos Beltran/Angel Pagan, Pat Burrell/Aubrey Huff, Cody Ross/Andres Torres, 300 words)
-
recklessness and water (Candide, the ichoglan/the baron of Thunder-ten-Tronckh, 541 words)
-
way too many unruly oranges (baseball RPF, Tim Lincecum, 490 words)
-
Castoffs (baseball RPF, Tim Lincecum/Buster Posey, 2,509 words)
-
celebrate (baseball RPF, Tim Lincecum/Buster Posey, 218 words)
-
Transport (pop, Nick Carter, 1,338 words)
More headers and content notes are on my
works page on AO3, if you want 'em.
Favorite story written this year:
way too many unruly oranges. That scene was just a lot of fun to think about (and one of the last times I felt truly upbeat about the Giants' chances that season).
Most popular story this year:
Castoffs. That makes sense to me, as it's my longest of the year (at, you know, 2500 words) and contains an actual romance. People like those, I hear...
Sexiest story: I didn't do
kink_bingo this year so I didn't push myself to write anything nearly as explicit as I did last year. I guess
get up and go gets this category, this time around. It's the piece that's most focused on sex, anyway.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Transport, my reponse for the 'things I would never write' challenge in the
popsoundboard February Festival. Cannibalism is bad, kids, don't do it!
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
celebrate, my first dip into baseball RPF. Though the shift was more towards perceiving them as characters susceptible of having fic written about them, rather than a change in how I saw their personalities.
Hardest story to write:
Transport. You should have seen the faces I made at the screen while I was writing it.
pensnest is a very evil challenge-giver.
Biggest disappointment: To be honest, even though it is the most popular one, I think
Castoffs goes into this category too. I feel like I didn't have as good a handle on the characters as I would have liked, and there's a lot I would do differently now. (But I don't want to sound ungracious to the readers who liked it! I'm still very happy that it was good enough to provide some enjoyment. I just think I can do better.)
Biggest surprise:
celebrate. Though I've been a baseball fan since I was little, I really wasn't expecting to start treating it as a fic fandom. But I'm so glad I did!
Most telling story:
lullaby, I suppose - that one is pure comfort fic, so it probably doesn't take much analysis to draw some conclusions about what I find comforting.
Total numbers: 6,066 words in 9 fics, according to the AO3 word counts.
Overall: I wrote one less piece than last year and significantly fewer words. However, I wrote in one more fandom (three last year, four this year). I wrote m/m and gen, but neither het nor f/f, which I'm quite disappointed to realize. In 2012 I definitely need to write more women. And here's the rundown on my
goals for the year:
- Write some popslash. I did write a pop story, but I see here that I said 'popslash', and what I wrote was gen, so I guess technically this is a fail.
- Finish a bandom WIP. Also a fail. I wrote some bandom ficlets, but my WIPs are still moldering away in the drafts folder. There was one I added a fair bit to, but not so much with the finishing.
- Write some more of the ficlets that I promised to various people back in the day.
Two down, two to go. I'm going to count this as a win, since I didn't make any progress on these at all in the previous two years.
- Participate in daysofawesome. Fail. I've been increasingly burned out on challenges in the last few years and I just didn't pull it together to finish what I had in mind for this.
- Participate in eid_ka_chand.
Done.
- Participate in a pop month challenge.
Done.- Write in at least one new fandom.
Done and
done! The thing that's funny to me is that I was reading heavily in two new fandoms at the end of 2010, and when I wrote up my goals for 2011 I was thinking I'd try the waters in one of those. But none of those bunnies panned out, and the two new fandoms I actually ended up writing in (baseball RPF and Candide) were not even on my radar as fandoms a year ago.
- Write more. Fail.
- Write better. Idk. I mostly like the things I wrote this year, but I don't think that they're better than stuff from past years. Neutral to fail.
- Write. Done!
Ambitions for next year: I'm not going to put any challenges on the list this year, I think, though that's not to say I might not still do some if I get inspired. But I don't want them hanging over me. I want to try to deliver on my last two promised ficlets though. I'd like to write some pop (genre carefully unspecified!) and some bandom. In particular, I really do want to finish that one bandom WIP that's pretty much only missing the sex scene, dammit. I want to write more baseball fic - I have a crack crossover bunny I've been itching to do, and I'd like to make another attempt at a full-length story. And hey, writing in another new fandom would be awesome. And more women characters! And as always: write more. Write better. Write.
