Before I forget:
I went to see Yo La Tengo at the Fillmore on April 23 with
joyfulseeker and
lovelypoet. The opener was really bad, with a lot of dissonance and vocals that punctuated a weird falsetto wailing with periodic hiccupy 'yip!'s. YLT was, naturally, a huge improvement.
joyfulseeker commented afterwards on how tight their rhythm section was, and their playing was truly impressive. However, I think it's fair to say that their set was challenging to their audience. They played a lot of their long jamming instrumental pieces, and I have to admit that I had trouble staying focused without melodies or lyrics to guide my ear. Also I'd hoped to hear more of my own favorite songs, especially for sentimental reasons the first ones with which an ex of mine introduced me to YLT, but that didn't happen. However, I'm still very glad that I got to see them live, and the high point for me was when they played "Stockholm Syndrome" and a general rush went through the crowd when they sang "Summer's what you make it," like everyone had just been waiting for that line. That was completely awesome.
Since then, I have pre-ordered a Take a Vacation! package. (My local girls can probably guess which one.) I am super excited for this album, you guys! I love all the songs I have heard so far. I am probably going to skip both choir rehearsal and a volunteer shift to go see TYV when they come through here again in June, that is the depth of selfish enjoyment to which I have sunk. ohh yes.
And indeed I find their arguments so persuasive and compelling that I'm going on an actual real-life vacation, leaving next Sunday. True, my trip will be 100% full of relatives, which is not the most relaxing way to spend two weeks. But since I will be neither at my job nor in my home country for those weeks, I think it counts. Which brings me to a poll!
Poll I really don't know what I'm supposed to do
