People above are so hitting on reasons I have. I do not have a family, it's just me..so perhaps that would be a bit different, but...

I LOVE the fact that if it snows, I may be woken up by maintenance and their snowblowers, but I do NOT have to go out and do it myself. Mowing the lawn wouldn't bother me as much, as that has to be regular, but not a "suprise, you have to mow your lawn to leave the house" like it is with shoveling a driveway.

And honestly? My bro and sis-in-law just bought a house. Granted, they knew about a lot of it going it..but there are so many things to do in a house with painting, so much more cleaning, keeping up the exterior, more area to heat and pay higher bills on, so many more things than can go wrong and need to be fixed that are expensive.

With a family, the space and yard and such would factor into my decisions. But, right now, it's not just a money things...there's a lot of reasons I'd rather not have a house.

Plus, make sure you know all the extra stuff that *could* go along with a house. I suspect you'll be in the city, but my bro and SIL now have to deal with septic system upkeep and they had to pay to drill a new well at their place, as the other one was contaminated. That cost a LOT. And it's still sucking in sand, so they're going to have to get that checked out. Man...count me out.

Yes, since having Cecily my desire for a house has increased by orders of magnitude. I want a space that is just ours, that doesn't have some other people's family members coming over to visit and parking in the driveway (for example). I really, really want a garage. (This duplex has a two-car garage, but the space in it is taken up by the landlord (on the one hand) and our downstairs neighbors (in return for them taking care of the yard and shoveling the walks, etc). So our family has no access to a garage and, hence, we have to spend the whole winter scraping ice off our car windows every morning before work. Being able to park indoors shouldn't make such a big difference, but since being back here in the frozen North, it does.

Not that it's remotely hard to find a 2-car garage, but you'd be amazed how many houses here in the "frozen North" have only a 1-car or no garage. The house my Sister in law was living in in LaCrosse when she met my bro had NO garage, so they both parked outside. And now, their new house has a ONE car attached garage. Luckily the previous owners built another garage a bit down the driveway, so the other care can also be covered.

Good thing...when they have a quarter mile driveway that includes a hill that they'll have to clear off. Less car-scraping time to take away from snow-clearing time!
