Trick-or-Treating!

Who says I am too old for trick-or-treating!!!! Last night's event on Embassy Row was fabulous. I love events done by Things to do DC - they are always well run and quite a bit of fun. We got candy from 8 different embassies/residences and from quite a few private residences as well.

Highlights of the evening include:

- Touring the ground floor of the Romanian Embassy - they gave out entire candy bars!!!

- Getting candy from Herb Haft's house, one of the many infamous characters in DC.

- No one was home at the Myanmar Embassy, but directly across the street we did get candy from the "Free Burma" protestors!

- Not only did we get candy from the brand new Monaco embassy (once belonged to Warren Harding, fixed up by HGTV's "Curb Appeal", and hand picked by Prince Albert) but we were invited in to tour the ground floor, and Ambassador Gilles Noghes and his American wife, Ellen (who was in her PJs) greeted us with their dog! Definitely the highlight of the evening!!!!

- No one was home at the Embassy of Afghanistan, but we did find a plastic shopping bag full of bags of candy! Nothing like stopping by the store, picking up candy for the trick-or-treaters, and then just dropping the bag by the front door before going out for the evening!

- Next door to the Residence of Iceland, we found 6 Secret Service hanging out in front of a "Valet Parking" sign. The Icelandic ambassador and his wife came outside to speak to us (and hand out candy!) and were hypothesizing with us as to who could be visiting - they said that their neighbors were just "an American couple", which I guess is strange since most people in that area were part of the diplomatic corps of various countries!

- Other countries we received candy from: Turkey, Netherlands, Portugal, and China.

So, the total embassy count for 2007 is currently ten. Five during the EU Open House, I have gone to the French embassy numerous times for ballroom dancing classes, I attended events at the Chinese and Ethiopian embassies, and I went into Monaco and Romania last night.

My laziness caused me to pass up going to a free happy hour at the Australian Embassy (through my membership with the Smithsonian) and I also was to lazy to attend the Kalorama House and Embassy Tour, where I would have visited additional embassies. I still plan on attending an event at the Italian embassy in December, so hopefully I can hit 11 by New Years!
