A few hours earlier, Alex had watched his mother disappear. She'd gone outside the house, talking about storm clouds and wanting to smell the rain. He hadn't paid much attention to it but he could still hear here, pacing the porch and talking to herself.

When the sounds got quieter, Alex got a little concerned and wandered over to the window. What he saw would probably appear in his dreams for awhile. Where there had been grass and sky and other houses, there was just blackness. Just an inky, looming blackness. And he looked just in time to watch his mother get swallowed by it. He tried to scream, to warn her but no sound came out. She was just gone and that blackness was still coming.

Without thinking, Alex ran. He ran out the back door and kept running. He tried to get a hold of his phone but he juggled it, dropped it and stepped on it, effectively knocking it out of service.

"Fuck it. Fuck!" Everyone was gone. Everyone. And all Alex could do was run. He ran until his lungs burned, until his calves ached and he didn't stop then.

He didn't once look over his shoulder.

[Alex is not getting eaten by the Nothing but his phone's out of service because I'm mean and the idea amused me. This is NFB but feel free to leave messages to his broke down phone. He'll be on the island soon to dispel any Nothing related fears.]

the angst for today is: the nothing, where i am: cedar rapids
