Ok. I really want to know why so many people hate Valentine's Day. Is it because, as Janelle said, it's the cool thing to do? Everyone is always saying things like "I'm so upset I don't have anyone to spend Valentine's Day with!" or "Valentine's Day is a commercial holiday created by Hallmark!" Well, I think everyone should just get over it. I'm so sick of hearing people complain about it.
First of all, Valentine's Day isn't just made up. It has it's roots in an ancient Roman fertility festival where everyone would run around naked hitting eachother. St. Valentine was a Christian martyr who, according to legend, did things like arrange secret marriages for Roman soldiers and passed love notes to his jailer's daughter.
Hallmark and excessive marketing have been a little overkill for Valentine's Day. But it's done the same to Christmas and Halloween and Thanksgiving. But does everyone walk around the weeks before these holidays saying how much they hate them? No. Not to the extent that they do on Valentine's Day. Plenty of people celebrate St. Patrick's Day who aren't Irish. They don't go around all pissed that they aren't Irish and can't enjoy the day. If you believe that Valentine's Day is a holiday perpetuated by the greeting card industry, then forget about it. And don't ruin it for the people who don't have a stick up their ass and like to just have a little fun.
Secondly, you don't need a Valentine who you are in love with to celebrate the holiday. It's about love. Celebrate it with all the people you love. Your friends and family, etc. If you feel that bad about yourself because you aren't with someone, you need some help. And if it's going to make you hate this harmless holiday so much, you need to get a life. If you don't want to celebrate Valentine's Day, then don't. But it's just a fun day. Stop taking it so seriously. It's about red paper hearts and candy.
