And so...

I'm in ASL club here at the good ol' University of Iowa. The best part of my day.. the best part of my week is when i run into the kids from ASL club. They make me happy, because then the deaf side of me gets to come out and play. Now that i'm NEVER home, I don't get a chance to sign with people... and it starts to weigh on me heavily. Taking all these classes for my (BullShit) deaf certificate, is fun and frusterating. Because I get to do what i like: learn about deaf people, talk about deaf people, play with deaf people. But I also have to deal with a lot of stupid hearing people in the classes too.

today i volunteered for ASL Club to go around to a bunch of the ASL classes to sell t-shirts for our fundraiser. it is insane to me how stupid people are. I walked into this ASL class, expecting MY ASL class.. instead i found a group of assholes taking advantage of their deaf professor. They were so completely rude. Talking the entire time.. whispering to one another. Not signing to their teacher, but speaking.. loudly. It was all i could do to keep my mouth shut. At one point they actually yelled at him from across the room. Condescendingly shouting his name to get his attention, as he was turned around signing to another student.

I even talked to the prof about the whole thing.. told him how shocked i was at their behavior.. how rude they were being. And he said they were ALWAYS like this. Amazing. Simply Amazing.

As I left the room, one of the boys spoke to me, "are you an ASL 4 student?".. Nope, I replied.. signing and talking... "My parents are deaf." And he got that look on his face. the one that all hearing people get.. the "but you can speak!?!" look. the "pitied and sad" look.

So i just looked him in the eye, and smiled. "yeah, so i passed out of ASL. Good luck in ASL one."

Asshole.
