What is the message we are sending out...

May 18, 2009 19:01

I just wanted to say a few things before I actually get into this post. Because I know that some of you will have your bit to say in regards to what I have to say. Please try not to get offended by anything I say, as I'm simply expressing my thoughts, (and this is my journal and if you like football, please stop reading now)...

I ... *HATE* football... And anything really associating with it. Anything that involves throwing around an egg shaped ball, I hate it... So naturally all of the shit in the news is getting on my nerves! Not because the content is crap, actually I take that back, some of it... most of it is crap. And really who fucking cares! I've reached a boiling point on the topic, this is why I am writing about it.

First off, I think it's wrong that the media is painting this dickhead jock as the victim... In my eyes, public figures acting badly *should* be scrutinized more because they are constantly in the light of the media. They willingly choose to put themselves in the media, therefore they shouldn't behave like Neanderthals!

Has anyone else noticed that it's mainly male sporting figures that do stupid things and then cry like bitches when everyone is judging them? Or when their jobs become jeopardized as a result. Look at the swimmer who's position in representing Australia is under fire because he bashed up one of his team mates...

What concerns me about it all is; What message are we sending to the world? Come to Australia, the land down under where our sporting figures beat up their own team members, have no respect for women, have gang bangs with drunk girls then when it all goes to shit we abandon the 'team' and let one man cop it all. Australia, where our sporting figures get caught, literally taking a piss on the side of sporting clubs...

What's pissing me off even more than the media, is people creating stupid 'support causes/groups' on facebook... Support this dickhead what?!?! Support his lack of respect for women, he willingly cheated on his wife, but he's still a top bloke! Cheat on your wife and everyone will still think you are the man! TV really is better off without people like that on it! (also anyone know how old this guy was at the time?)

What message are we sending out to younger generations; It's ok for a man to cheat on his wife with some drunk girl and 10 other team mates. It's ok for a man to cheat on his wife; he's still a top bloke! I think public figures *should* be scrutinized more, these are the people that kids look up to! These are the people that kids idolize and want to be like. These are the people that do make the news when they fuck up!

What shits me about the media in this instance is, if this happened with a bunch of randoms, it wouldn't make a mention on the news or be the front page of any newspaper for a few consecutive days. And the constant harping on about the same thing in every news bulletin, come on, there has got to be someone/something more interesting out there to focus on.

Another thing that has been in the news is football teams that do engage in such acts for the purpose to team building. Clearly the team building doesn't work because, where are the rest of these losers when the one sole loser is under fire by everyone. I commend him for saying he was involved, at least he had half a ball to cop what has been thrown at him. Also these supposed 'team building' activities, isn't it just a little bit gay that grown men are all getting it out and masturbate at the same time, if it weren't for the girl involved these guys would be classified as raging fags! Noooo but they can't be gay because then all of these grown straight men that worship the game would be supporting fags, can't have that!!!!

I think it's funny that there are a lot of people out there saying that people shouldn't judge the people involved. Hey, you can blame the media for that! If it wasn't constantly in our faces, people wouldn't judge! But everyone has something to say about everything, regardless of how small it might be! Everyone has an opinion about everything.

On the flipside...However true or false all of these allegations are, on the girls side; What message are we sending to women who have suffered at the hands of men that have taken advantage of them, by making comments like, 'it was her own stupid fault for not keeping her legs shut'. Is the message that people saying these comments; 'You're a slut, we don't care what the truth is, we don't believe you, you're a liar'. What message are we sending to women who have been raped?

Everyone who is saying 'But it was consensual, it's her fault'; are they saying that, if they were in that situation and the drunk girl they had their member in, was not allowed to change her mind? Are they saying that if half way during, she said no, that she really meant yes, in which case it becomes rape? Where do people draw the line, when does consensual sex become rape? In this case, is there a possibility that this girl did express discomfort and everyone else took her no, as a 'yes' and continued on? No-one will ever know, it's her word against his, and everyone else who was in the room who don't have the balls to speak up.

What is the message that we are sending to rape victims; don't bother speaking out, because no one will believe you. Speak out, for your own piece of mind, there will be those that believe you. As there is a high number of rape victims that never speak up at all, I think it is good that this girl has spoken out. I've heard/read a lot, people saying, 'why bother bringing it up 7 yrs after the incident?'; to these people I say, did it ever occur to you that someone who has gone through a traumatic experience might actually be that fucked up as a result of the situation, that they might actually be silenced by fear and insecurity. We don't live in a world where women have the same rights as men, we live in a world where women have to constantly prove themselves to the world. No one should feel that much fear that if they speak up, they will be shunned...

There are two sides of the story, in this case there are about 12 sides, but we've only heard a few sides, somewhere in the middle lies the truth. We weren't there, we can't judge any of the people involved. We've gotten the media's side of the story...
