'tis of thee

two choices before her
wooing her, showing off
talking sweet, looking clean
one is young, one is not.

who they are before her:
strong, smart, capable
can she believe they are
as shiny behind her?

aimed at each other
they tear down
aimed at her, they are honorable
their hypocrisy makes her sick.

to put her well-being
in inconsistent hands
is to climb
a slippery slope.

the woes in her heart unassuaged
her distrust of the two suitors--
"to choose the lesser of two evils
is to choose evil."

all of the beckoning
and sugary words
will cease in the autumn breeze
and she shall find herself
his footstool, his podium,
his luggage, his.
