No, she wasn't my grandma, but there is no doubt in my mind that Stella was a great grandma, and a pretty awesome lady. For starters, her maiden name, which I won't even try to spell, pronounced "gree-whack" (at least, last I heard it from her granddaughter), supposedly has just about every crossword puzzle-unfriendly letter in it. She was Polish, and you know how they like their Cs, Zs, Ws, and Ys all together in one word. Grandma Awe was feisty and stubborn, but not in a bad way. It just made her all the more loveable. She is one of the few people I had the pleasure of knowing who actually completed crossword puzzles in pen. Now, if you can't admit that's amazing, you're crazy.
Now, it's true that I didn't know her very well or get to see her many times, but the times that I did get to visit her, she welcomed me into her home like I was another of her grandchildren. She treated me like family when, really, she had no reason to. She even sent me a card for my high school graduation.
No, she wasn't my grandma, that is true. But I'll miss her and enjoy the fond memories and stories. My heart and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.
