Part One Clark didn't leave Lex's side until he was pushed away in the emergency room and ordered by an old nurse to stay in the visitor's area. He was deeply worried because Lex hadn't recovered consciousness yet. He must have hit his head pretty hard. Hell, who was he kidding? The damn kinky mutant had almost crushed Lex's skull against that wall. Clark shivered and went to sit down, because suddenly, he felt his knees go weak.
He just realized how close he had come to losing Lex. Really losing Lex. The very thought of it made his chest hurt and the feeling made him want to puke. He shook his head and calmed himself down. Lex was alive. He was breathing steady and the paramedics hadn't seemed very worried about his head trauma in the ambulance. They had told Clark that they would have to do a standard battery of exams, but that Lex would regain consciousness eventually and that everything would be fine.
But, what if Lex didn't regain consciousness? What if Lex fell into a coma? Lex did have the market cornered on head traumas. What if...? Clark stood up, stopping this line of thought abruptly. He needed to see Lex, just a peek, right now. Just a glance and he would calm down. He needed to see Lex talking to the doctors or doing something, being, you know, *alive*, and he would came back and sit down like a good boy. Just a little peek. It wouldn't hurt anybody.
So, he cheated a little. He waited until the nurse in the reception area was distracted and used a burst of super speed to sneak into the emergency room. He scanned the ward and quickly found the familiar bones. Yes, he was pathetic. He knew Lex down to his bone structure. It was useful. And, well, kind of sexy in a strange obsessive way. Kinky, too, even if he wasn't ready to recognize that.
Lex was lying on a hospital bed quietly and calmly. He seemed to waiting for something... patiently? That was a bit *out of* character for Lex, but at least, Lex was alive and, well, conscious. Maybe he was disoriented and stuff, but he was okay. Now Clark felt silly and kind of girly for all the panicking he had done. And then, he remembered the promise he had made to Lex and himself. As soon as Lex was conscious he would be *talk* to him.
And Lex *was* conscious now. And maybe a little disoriented and that could be an advantage. He couldn't get *that* mad if he wasn't feeling 100% himself, right? Clark chuckled. He was thinking like Lex, but hey, who could blame him?
Besides, the safest place to have this talk was probably in the hospital. Lionel Luthor couldn't have bugged the Smallville hospital. So, now was the moment, Clark thought. Now or never. He took a deep breath and grabbed all his courage. He walked to Lex's room and knocked once opening the door.
"Hey, Lex," he said, closing the door carefully behind him. Lex turned from the bed, with the most earnest and open expression that Clark had seen on Lex, ever.
"Hi!" he said, in a cheery voice. Like he was really happy to see him. Not that Lex wasn't happy to see him. Clark was positive that Lex was always happy to see him, and that wasn't just his ego talking, but this sounded more like... anxious-happy.
"Lex. I need to talk to you. And this is serious stuff. It's about me, and well, it involves you, of course. I think I have been keeping this secret way too long, if you know what I mean. And I don't want to keep it a secret anymore. I think you are worth it. And I trust you. You are my best friend. Am I making any sense here?" Clark asked.
Lex looked confused at first, looking at Clark with the same open expression and then, it was like something clicked in his mind and he smiled. "Of course," he said.
Clark sighed with relief. He was about to open his mouth to say more, when the door opened and a group of doctors came in and faced Clark.
"What are you doing here, young man?" The eldest doctor demanded. Another doctor yelled for security and Clark turned anxious eyes to Lex. Lex extended one hand to Clark, motioning him to come closer. Clark did so.
"This 'young man' here, Doctor Walters, is my boyfriend. He obviously skipped the formalities to see me, and he doesn't know I have amnesia. But we just had a talk, and he explained everything to me. So, anything you have to say to me, you can say it in front of him," Lex said firmly and took Clark's hand in his.
Clark looked at Lex. Then he looked at the doctors. Then back at Lex. Hang on a sec. Lex had amnesia? He quickly replayed the things he had said to Lex in his mind and groaned. Smooth move, Kent. He understood how Lex had misunderstood them. How he had screwed things up.
"Wait a minute. You came with Mr. Luthor in the ambulance, didn't you?" another doctor asked.
Clark nodded, not knowing what to say. Lex squeezed his hand and smiled at him.
"Then you are..." Doctor Walters checked the papers he had in his hands. "Clark Kent, that's correct?"
"Yes, sir," Clark answered.
"And you are Mr. Luthor's boyfriend?" Doctor Walters asked, raising a suspicious eyebrow.
Clark looked at the doctors and opened his mouth to deny it. He would explain how everything was a big fat misunderstanding and... he caught Lex's eyes. Lex's blue pleading eyes. Eyes that were scared, lonely and that screamed: "don't leave me alone".
He gulped and said. "Yes, sir."
And Lex smiled.
