THE BIG SNOW DUMP OF 2010

Feb 07, 2010 11:30

some of the reporters have called it "the blizzard of 2010" but i think my title is more descriptive. also apparently to technically be termed a blizzard you need a strong wind which we did not have at all. pittsburgh got a lot more snow than the forecasters were initially calling for us to get. 4"-8" late in the day they altered it to 8"-12". by saturday morning the snow had finally changed from huge heavy wet flakes to tiny, tiny dry flakes. the snow finally stopped a bit after noon. i took the yard stick out to take a few pictures before i started to dig out. on the driveway there was a good 19" and in the yard there was just shy of 22". we are not yet finished digging out. greentree has plowed their main and secondary roads the road our driveway opens onto is a city street and has yet to be touched.

to make this all the more interesting out power went out just after 2000 friday. the low friday night fortunately wasn't that bad 30f, but still pretty chilly when you have no heat. we have a hot air furnace and no electricity means no heat. i missed the boiler at my parents old house. it was 57 in the dining room (where the thermostat is located) when i woke up. it had dropped to 54f by the time the power came back on just after 1400 saturday. that's a good 18 hours of no electricity. i'm glad it came back on. there were still tens of thousands of people without power and heat last evening. the city and county and local communities set up warming shelters.

we didn't get the worst of the storm either. we have friends in va that got a good 30" and a town in maryland, i forget the name at the moment, received 35.5" of snow.

this storm would have actually been fun had our power not been interrupted, but it also could have been a lot worse for us. we're supposed to go to a friend's house to watch the superbowl, but like i said earlier our street has yet to be plowed plus i have to finish clearing a path for the car and clean off the car.

that reminds me. yesterday a guy and his high school aged son got stuck at the in the intersection while i was shoveling the driveway. i walked down the street to help them out and after a good ten minutes of pushing and shoveling we got them out. the son and i were pushing the car as the dad was "driving". the odd thing was that neither the son nor the father said so much as "thanks". the kid walked to the now free car put his shovel in the trunk and got in the passenger seat. it's possible the dad said something out the window that i just didn't hear. it doesn't really matter in any event, at least as long as they don't turn out to be some kind of fugitives.

hopefully today will be totally uneventful and i can rest up for work tomorrow. maybe get a decent amount of reading done. we'll have to see what happens next. wednesdy they're calling for anywhere from 2"-6" of more snow. hopefully it's only two. i am really, really ready for the weather to break and spring arrive. right now they're expecting it to be near 40 on the 20th. maybe that will be the return to normal temps. it's been signifigantly cooler than usual most of this year so far.

i should get back to digging out the car and cleaning the driveway.

storm, power outage, snow, no heat, 2010
