Kurt's in his usual spot in the SUV (when they go on "family gatherings" or "family dinners", that is), behind the driver's seat where his father is sitting at the wheel, and to the left of Finn. He's watching out the window as they make the progression towards the annual carnival, half-listening to what Burt is telling Carole, something about the smallest horse in existence, blah de blah.

There's an air of general excitement in the car, but Kurt hasn't decided whether or not he's looking forward to this. He'd been last year when it was just him and his dad and had spent the entire night trying to drag Burt away from all the food stands. ("None of this is organic! Do you realize what you're putting into your body?" - "...what about the deep-fried cheesecake? Cheese is dairy, made out of milk. Milk's good for you.") He can't help but roll his eyes a little at the memory, simultaneous with Carole's laughter from the front of the car.

He glances over at Finn, and can't help but smile at him. Carole can take care of his dad this year, Kurt's got more important things to think about, and to plan...

Not that he has a lot of time to plan this time, as they're already pulling into the big parking lot - no spaces, just gravel and grass, it's all wide open underneath a setting sun, the orange warm glow casting over the whole carnival, the tall rides and booths all lined up symmetrically. The lights on a lot of the rides are starting to come on now that it'll be dark soon, and Kurt idly wonders how much electricity all of these machines take to run as they hop out of the car, gravel crunching underfoot.

Burt's got his arm around Carole's shoulders as they head to the entrance, and Kurt falls back a few steps behind them so he can briefly brush Finn's hand with his own as they walk, casting him a small smile before his dad turns their tickets in and they gather inside the fenced-in carnival, a little away from the main entrance so they're not blocking anyone's way.

"So what do you guys feel like doing first?" Burt asks. "I bought some tickets for rides, and cash for the booths and food stands, so--"

"Dad, please. Finn and I aren't five, and I don't think you're being very fair to Carole. You should take her and let her do what she wants to do. Finn and I can handle ourselves, right Finn?" He holds out his hand toward Burt, though. "You can just give us half of the cash and the ride tickets. We've all got our phones, and we can meet back at the entrance when it's time to leave." With the amount of bossing around Kurt does with his dad sometimes, their relationship is almost humorous.

Finn catches that brief smile and sends back his own, a little lopsided, and brushes the tips of his fingers against the inside of the smaller boy's wrist for just a second, just the tiny moment that their hands bumped together. Innocent as anything, barely enough to be noticed, much less looked at strangely. It's these tiny, stolen moments of affection that Finn likes the most, he thinks--though, of course, the rest of it's pretty great too.

He can't help but chuckle when Kurt takes charge of the situation, and his mother does too. She nods, glancing up at Burt with a fond look, saying, "Yes, I think they'll be fine by themselves." Looking back to the boys, she adds, "It's 8:00 now; how about we meet back here at 10:00?"

"Sounds good to me," Finn agrees, and if he sounds a little excited, it can't really be helped--in a lot of ways, Finn's just a giant kid, and this is like the best thing ever when it comes to that. Rides, impossible-but-still-fun-to-try games, hilariously cheesy haunted houses and totally fake freak shows? Hell yes.

...Plus, it's kind of awesome that he's got Kurt to go with him.

He ignores the itch to put his arm around Kurt's shoulders (almost mirroring their parents) by stuffing his hands into his pockets, and he grins down at him with a nod. "Wanna get going?"
