John Harkness

John Harkness was a frequent poster to rec.gambling.poker back in the day...that is, back in the day when it had a lot of poker content, and stuff that was really useful.

Here's a picture I got of him at the final table of the BARGE NLHE event which he won in 1999.

And here is a photo of him along with the 1998 champ.

He tried to keep in shape, often walking daily while on trips to Vegas, decent walks, too, like from downtown to the Stratosphere and back. He would do this in the early morning hours, when the rest of us were catching what little sleep we would get in Vegas.

He liked to eat over at Magnolia's, the coffee shop in the 4 Queens. We would often get together for a meal at WSOP time back when it was held downtown at Binions.

So, this one time after BARGE, we headed up to Mesquite, about an hour north, for the BARGE hangover, out at the Oasis Spa & Resort. Sheri's driving, John and Rick Charles are in the back seat. John's got this box with I don't know, 50, maybe a hundred different types of Jelly Bellies, maybe five of each flavor. He graciously offers to share throughout the trip, worked out fine til we got to the hotel, where he proceeds to dump the entire contents on the floor of the lobby as we are trying to check in. Fucking Jelly Bellies everywhere!

I'm not sure if this is funny, or if you had to be there.

One of the stories about his death had the following quote:

Eve Goldin, senior librarian at The Film Reference Library, called him "a curmudgeon's curmudgeon, but a pussy cat at heart."

I'd have to agree.
