I made a trip out to Yunnan last week. So I'm going to share some pictures and things with you guys.
Yunnan is a southwestern province of China. It has the second highest elevation of any province, next to Tibet. It is also immediately East of Tibet. Yunnan is the most diverse of any province because it contains so many different ethnic groups, each with their own language, culture, and customs.
The first day I saw the Ashima people. They wear these triangle hats. Different colors and patterns on the hat signified different relationship status (single, taken, married...) If a man touched a girl's hat, he would have to live with her for 3 years. Afterwards the girl decided if she wanted to marry the guy.
The first place I went to was Stone Forest. Through millions of years of earthquakes the rocks have taken on a forest-like formation.
This one was about to fall on me
This is me being an ass
A flood part of the park
Within the forest we could see a monk's pagoda
more pictures of the rocks
hungry hungry fishes
the beautiful plains
at the end of the day i got hit with some heavy rainfall, so i took shelter in a village
The second day I went to some place which its name I forgot. The pictures will explain
I thought this was funny
I went on a boat across the muddy waters
I walked through a couple of caves
waterfall hidden in the forest
some rock thingies. i'm not really sure what they are called
a werid rock formation within the cave
After I got out of the cave, I took a lift back
At the end of the day, I drove through the province capital, Kuming.
A buddhist tower in the middle of the city
The next day I was in a van, on the way to Lijiang. On the way we stopped to check out the world's biggest jade exhibit and some spots in the town Dali, 2 hours from Tibet.
The mountains of Dali. Tibet is right on the other side.
A village gate in the town of Dali. The Bai ethnic group lived here.
they are doing construction here
some native Bai women doing a dance
I stalked an old man back to his house
In front of his door. The swastika signifies peace and is a very popular symbol in this area
We arrived in Lijiang.
Take care of cave, please.
The next day I went to the Yulong snow mountain.
The water was very green on the way there.
The mountains, with Shangri-La in the clouds.
A waterfall in the mountain flows down to this river
Funny images tell you want to/not to do
We could ride yaks across the water, but I did not
I took a lift up the mountain, at a height of over 4000 meters above sea level. Being on the plains here made me light-headed. I tried running around for a couple minutes and the lack of oxygen in the air made me see everyhing in pulsating squiggles.
I didn't go any further than this.
Back down the mountain, I had lunch at this place.
There was an old village here. The mountain spring flows down through town and the village is build around this body of water.
While I was exploring I found a young Mao
The water was clean enough to wash clothes and even vegetables.
This was downtown, I suppose
I went right at this junction
A lot of people in this area smoked tobacco out of bongs
This was a water filtration system.
A cool bar in town
The top of a bridge
where I found this lovely girl
Westernization has reached even this village
That night, I went to a musical.
Dancing people
Instruments
All the different ethnic groups in Lijiang. 4th and 5th from the left are the nightwalkers where the men live in their house during the day and sneak out to see their loves at night.
Later that night I went Lijiang old town, the most popular village in the city. The Naxi people lived in Lijiang. They live in a matrifocal society. The men smoke, drink, and gamble all day. Women do all the housework as well as support the family financially.
Here's a small part of the town.
All the streets were bustling with people. Walking down the crammed streets I spotted many people singing from the balcony.
A pretty girl who hosted the White Conch
I found a bar/dance club
I tore it up, obviously
The next day I went back to Dali. Dali is famous for its three buddhist towers.
There are many international hostels in Yunnan. Cheap rooms ($2-10 a night depending on room size)
Gates to old town Dali
A garden in old town
The last day I went to the flower market, and bought two bouqets of fresh roses for about $1.5. I also went to an international jade exhibit, where the world's largest green jade sculpture resides. It is a 4 meter tall Buddha. Unfortunately I couldn't take any pictures.
A last tidbit of engrish for you
The END
