While I am not Spuffy, I do think there was something real that had Buffy drawn to Spike over so many seasons.
Joss seems to drive characters, emotions, and plotlines into the ground where no one can love or believe in anything. In Jossverse, perhaps recognizing nothing is truer than the moment and what happens later cannot affect the beauty of that original moment.
I don't know about Joss liking Bangel. I think Angel was going to be written off on BTVS which is why the spinoff was created. The viewers loved Angel so much and networks want to lose those viewers. Obviously, I may have made that up. It was so long ago, my memory fails.
In my heart, I love Buffy/Angel. But I hated the over-drama of S3 and Buffy's character whenever she appeared on ATS. So I see what you hate about the presentation of their romantic storyline. (Also, I haven't read but the first few of the comics).
So I say focus your hate on Joss. And hold onto hope and love for once was! It's what I do. ♥
Hating Joss doesn't really solve anything, though! It's his story to tell... I rather blame mysekf for getting invested in this!
I could accept the story swaying towards the Bangel side, if done correctly and respectully. But so far the comics have obliterated Spike/Buffy, as if it's not even a dot in the radar. We deserve better than that... Some optimistic Spuffy shippers believe there is more to come, and trust Joss... but I can't see any silver lining, at the moment!
Aww, I wished I knew how to cheer you up. *hugs* I guess just telling you to ignore the comic doesn't really help, huh? Whenever I read something about the comics it just seems to be so different from the shows that I knew and loved that I have no troubles to just disregard them. As an AtS fan, for me Angel and his fellow combatants died in that alley at the end of the show and that's it. I don't see the comics as a continuation of the show. But then, I am good at repressing - till today I refuse to acknowledge that there have ever been sequels to The Matrix, for example. *g*
The whole storyline is so ludicrous, anyway... I am embarassed that's it's associated to the show I loved (but there are people really enjoying these comics, so to each their own, I guess!).
*sighs* I wish I could offer something positive, but I feel sad and bitter too. The show ended with bangel and spuffy ships having equally (im)possible futures, so that shippers of both could have their share of beautuful angst *and* something to hold on to / to hope for, as well. But now Joss has tripped that balance. I don't even mind the fact that it is in favor of commercially advantageous bangel ship as much as I am sad that it devalues and retcons what we spuffies had. :(
I could say that the bangel storyline can't hold forever, and knowing Joss' love for heartbreaking twists and his apparent intent to wring as much from the beloved characters as possible, he *will* probably switch to spuffy someday when the bangel thing dries out. I am just not sure if I personally want that, though, but... well. *sighs again

Exactly!!
I'm just sad..I feel silly, but I have cried over this. I just feel I have invested in something that is being invalidated.
And I agree, the Spike/Buffy storyline will always be one of the greatest ever, I don't care what people say. The development and progression, the complexity, the concurrent uglyness and beauty in that storyline will hardly be matched again. But I'm starting to think that the whole storyline kinda grew on its own, beyond what the writers meant it to be. I wonder why they spent 3 years developing Spuffy as a major part of the show if now they are going to overlook it.
What bugs me is that all the writers involved are always Bangel-friendly.
But whatever... we will see what happens. If we fall, we fall together!

Me too. The cynic in me says that's because bangel is based on a more popular, more... archetypic formula that can win many teenage readers with a taste for "Twilight"-like romance. While the adult complexity of spuffy relationship, the journey of it, is hard to even translate into comic media.
I'm starting to think that the whole storyline kinda grew on its own, beyond what the writers meant it to be.
Perhaps, but... isn't that what makes it, in a way, only more real? :)
I think you may be right there... comics are generally addressed to a different target audience, mainly teenagers (although not exclusively), and Bangel is definetely more simple/straightforward than Spuffy. Add to that the fact that they are the title characters, and you have the formula for success/sales (according to the writers/producers, not to me! LOL )

Sigh. This is making me really unhappy! :(

The main problem is that the comics take too long to unravel, and I don't think I can keep stressing about this for years, until the end of season 9!
And yes, I hope there's a good explanation for what is going on with Angel!
