Musician's Life a la City

Hooray for living in a city. In Russia I charge $50 for singing or playing trumpet for a wedding. That is, for all of my preparation, rehearsal time, often music selection, and the actual day, I charge $50. I'm afraid if I tried to charge more than that, I wouldn't really get a lot of offers (which my mom likes to constantly reinforce) My friends at school, well, my music friends at school, go nuts when I tell them that. They all charge at least $75 for just one song at a wedding, and that's if it doesn't require much work. They think it's disgusting what I'm paid at home.

I'm singing for a mass today at the campus chapel. It's a really little thing - sing a few hymns, smile, that kind of thing. Fifty dollars. No preparations, just show up and sing. Fifty dollars. And the guy who asked me to do it apologized for it being so little.

Last spring I got paid a couple hundred bucks a month for singing in a church choir in northern Kentucky. Show up at the weekly rehearsal and the weekly service and know the music - that's what I got paid for.

I get paid $500 a semester to sing with another little choir for the church.

I love being a musician in a city.
