Well, I rolled the garment rack into the living room (as my pre-pennsic hand sewing is being done in front of the TV) and hung everything back up so I could thoroughly inspect everything and have it handy when I wanted to work on it.
Well, I'm glad I did that. I have 2 "very ratty" kitchen tunics that were in need of serious mending. I worked on the worst one tonight. it's an old old tunic and it is a faded out madder rose color (much like a lot of the slave costumes in HBO's ROME). So I stitched up the armpits, cut old frayed cords, re-fringed the sleeves. Picked off the slubs in the area that had stains in the front, then spayed it heavily with some Shout liquid and it's in the wash. If the stains come out, then I will throw it into the scarlet dye bath with the linen palla (or rather AFTER ) the linen palla, needs first dibs).
So I've been burning the midnight oil (or should I say the 2am Oil) for the past few days. I think I'm done sewing for the night and will have the boy, who IS staying up late, put the laundry into the dryer for me.
I got some nifty clothes from a mundane clothing swap a while back but had bagged them up and put them aside because they reeked of perfume. Well I fished them out and they are in the wash now with the kitchen tunic and there are 2 cute pairs of pants in the batch, one of which looks comfy enough for the drive up to pennsic.
So now that I have all my garb out: here is a real inventory
2 ratty kitchen tunics (soon to be made servicable)
3 plaid tunics
1 golden yellow linen fitted tunic
1 blue linen tunic (embroidered)
1 black cotton syrian coat.
It's a bit on the heavy side, long sleeved and I have nothing to wear with. I need to make some of those salwar pants or somehthing to go with. It hits me above ankle and would benefit from that. It's also long sleeved and not suited for mucht this time of year.
1 drab olive brown linen/rayon blend kyrtle (kind of a Nockert Type 1)1 red wool maunch sleeved gown for cold weather
1 madder rose italian proto-cotehardie (embroidered)
1 black & white 11th century byzantine dancer's costume (with the beaded collar)
1 red linen/rayon blend roman tunica (partially embroidered)
1 lightweight linen white man's smock that would be good for schlepping around camp in if I had a pair of hose or braies to go with.
I also have a beige wool blend full circle cloak, and a burgundy heavy wool dagged mantle (with little oak leaves).
I'm not bringing any of the italian renn as I'm about 10 pounds more than I need to be to even think about fitting in the larger of the two.
So it's not that I don't have anything to wear now. I' m just amazed at how old many of my crappy old tunics have survived. (testament to my OCD sewing - reinforcing everything I guess) So I think I have enough tunics for now.
I might still make a NICE overtunic or two.
But I think the Roman tunicae are my first priority.
And finish altering the wool and linen hose I have.
I was watching Rome again and part of me wants to do ties for the joins instead of the flat buttons on a tunica. But I mostly saw that on the pleated ones. but that is easily enough replaced later. I'm going to look for the roman costume book at Pennsic that
baronesspixie recommended to me (support your sca bookseller and all...) and then apply what I learn to current (if possible) and future incarnations..
Well it's Pumpkin time- I'm going to bed.
Will work on the hose and dyeing tomorrow. I'm having to resist the urge to run out and find more scarves. This fashion trend won't last forever...
