The church had children giving out heart-shaped stickers that said "Jesus loves Cowboys" and "Jesus loves Cowgirls". The people were genuinely friendly and spoke about missionary work in foreign countries, etc etc the music was great... I really thought I had come to a place that accepted all people and was a meeting ground for my dad and I. After all, their shop had a bumper sticker that said "Christ Died For Us Cowboys' Sins, Too."
And then the sermon began with politics.
The subject of the sermon today? "How Brokeback Mountain is Destroying the Image of the American Cowboy"
I should've seen this coming.
A few sentences after the priest / minister / whatever non-denominationals have said "But after they get AIDS, the homosexuals'll know the choice they made is sinful in the eyes of God" I got up and walked out of the auditorium and sat in the hall. My eventually walked out with the rest of the crowd and told me how he understood - and the people there didn't say anything because they didn't have children like me or really know gay people, and that I didn't have to go to that church again if I didn't want to.
Jesus loves Cowboys.
I love my dad.
