Okay so this weekend my sister-in-law and I spontaneously decided to drive down to Waterloo, NY to shop at the outlets.  It was more of a trip just for fun because once you pay for your hotel and gas and food for the weekend you've really comsumed all of the savings you've made by shopping at the Outlets but HEY, what the heck.  It's not like I ( Read more... )

LMAO!!

With apologies to all our American friends... I can honestly say that your experience does not shock me in the least.

I have found that a vast majority of Americans are quite ignorant of anything outside of their own country. Not all... but a vast majority.

We used to get drivers who would cross the bridge in the middle of July, NINETY-plus degreee weather, and ask us where the snow was.

It's like, Dude, you just crossed the bridge. Yes, we are a separate country, but still... REALLY?? Are you really that stupid??

Now, again, not all Americans are this ignorant, but sadly, many are.

It's actually quite sad because the lack of exposure to the rest of the world is a direct result of the media. Unfortunately for a country that claims to have built their entire existence on freedom of speech etc... they don't realize just how censored their information is. They know about the States.... and nothing more. It's really quite sad.

I too, however, do not think that this applies to EVERYONE,..... but it does apply to MANY.

I also was talking to a guy at LL Bean who asked me what kind of canoe I owned. When I said I didn't have a canoe he was surprised. WTF????? This dude was older too.... like maybe in his late 40's - early 50's. I left wondering if he realized how much an idiot he sounded like.

What is really funny is that it's one thing to be uninformed about something and realize that you don't know.... it's another thing entirely to actually THINK you know a whole lot when you don't have a clue..... I have to admit I felt embarrassed for both of these dudes.

I felt the same way the first time I went to see Jana. Her family had no clue at all. It was the middle of summer, and they were asking me if I had snow back home. I had to explain to them that I am MORE southern than Detroit, so yes, my summers were hot.

It's the stupid little things like that that irk me the most when it comes to traveling in the US. For example, do not get me started on the "oot and aboot" shit when I am saying "out and about". That pisses me off more than anything.

I did not find this level of ignorance when I was in France... or even Brasil. Just in the USA. And it is sad...

What do you mean you don't own a canoe?!?! ;o)

Well, my family doesn't come from money. So when I go down stream to trade with my neighbour I have to put all my pelts in zip locks to keep them dry and then I have to swim..... that's just the way it is up here in the Great White North. It's a harsh life, but we cope.
