Okay, so this morning I needed to run out to Costco and then the grocery store. I like to buy most of our stuff at Costco but I find that their produce really sucks so I always make a quick stop at the grocery store for my fruit and veggies and a few other little items that you can't get at Costco.
As I always do, because I'm nice, I called my Mother-in-law and asked her if she wanted to come with us. I do this because we live outside of the city and my in-laws do not drive. Anyway, I told her if she wanted anything at Costco that she was welcome to come.
**It should be noted that when I run errands in the morning I have a limited amount of time to run them in because my little guy gets on the bus at 8:45 am and he gets home at 12:10 pm.... It's a 20 minute drive to Costco, so take at least 40 minutes off my 'window of opportunity' for travel.
So my mother-in-law says she wants to come so I tell her I'll pick her up at 9:30 ish... there's no point in going any earlier because Costco doesn't open till 10:00. So, if I leave by 9:30 am, I have just enough time to go to Costco, then hit the grocery store on the way home and be back in time to meet my little man. I don't like to time things too tight just in case something happens like we get stuck in traffic or something... meeting the bus is not like an appointment where you can get away with being 5 minutes late... it's not a flexible time.. YOU MUST be there when the bus arrives.
Anyway, I pick my mother-in-law up and she hasn't even gotten her seat belt on when she says... "I have a favor to ask."
I knew immediately! Before I could stop myself I yanked up my sleeve and checked my watch! ..... cuz I knew what was comin' next!
"I need to go to the bank."
FUCK! What drives me nuts isn't that she asked me to take her to the bank. What drives me nuts is that SHE KNEW when I called and asked her if she wanted to go to Costco. She knew she didn't need anything at Costco... she didn't even buy anything!!!!! She planned the entire time to say she wanted to come to Costco and then to hit me with her extra little errand once she got in the car.
This pisses me off because it is SNEAKY, MANIPULATIVE, AND DISHONEST. Not to mention that if she had have told me sooner that she needed to go to the bank, we could have left earlier and we could have done all the errands we needed to. But instead, she pretends that she had to come to Costco and then hits me with the bank errands. Because we had to go to the bank, I didn't have time for the grocery store so I never got the fruit and vegetables that we needed so now I have to run back out later to get that shit... with 2 kids, that's not something I really want to do.
I don't get it. I don't understand why she can't just be honest upfront when I call. I have NEVER said 'no' to her when she needed something, but that is about to change drastically. The next time something like this comes up I'm going to say... "Sorry, I have a list of things I have to do in this tiny 2 hour window and we are not going to be able to squeeze your 'surprise' errand in. Maybe next time you should tell me ahead of time and we can leave 30 minutes ealier... then we could do it."
I just don't understand why, when it comes to errands, she always feels like she has to 'sneak one in'. That just gets under my skin. I don't like feeling like I'm being manipulated, and I DO NOT like being lied to.
Maybe I should just stop telling her before I run an errand. One of these days I'm going to go off on her and it ain't gonna be pretty.
