Follow your &heart; She could tell by the drunken swagger in her boyfriend's step that it was going to be a long night indeed. Long as in rush to hide their son in the closet with headphones over his ears to make sure he didn't hear. Long as in making sure that she was hidden underneath the stairs. Her instincts always told her to fight back, that was when she was much younger though. Back before Leo when Mark was just starting to be this way. Just starting to be a drunk; a mean drunk. When her parents warned her but she still moved forward claiming that their love could over come it. Looking back, some part of her hated her naivete when it came to the man. Part of her loved the result of it in the form of her son.
That's all the good that ever came out of dating Mark Strauss.
She could feel the rush of blood pumping through her veins for the time being as she listened to his footsteps thunder door the stairs, pulling her legs up tightly against her chest for a moment and wishing herself away. He always managed to find her and not Leo. But than again, she'd taken her time to talk her son through everything. This is what you do when momma screams. Stay put. This is what you do when daddy screams for you. Stay put. Don't come out until momma comes to get you. She'd gone through it over and over again that someone would think she had enough sense to leave when it got bad. But she couldn't. One look into the real world of single parent-status and struggling more than she did now scared her.
But not as much as when the door creaked open and Mark's hand shot from the light that blinded her, fisting her hair before yanking her out of her hiding place. A small scream left her as she was dragged into the living room kicking and screaming. It wasn't ever so much as thinking he was going to rape her as much as thinking he would kill her and she'd be leaving her son alone in this world. Jesseca's screams filled the house as she took punch after punch. Delicate skin bruising almost on impact of the punches as she kicked and tugged at his hair, trying to push him him away from her. She didn't even know what she was screaming until she kicked him off of her using all the strength in her legs before starting to crawl away from him towards the stairs before his hand wrapped around her ankle and began pulling her back. "Momma?" It was a quiet whisper of a word that had her brown eyes darting up to the top of the stairs where her son was, paralyzed with fear before she glanced over to Mark who seemed like a diabolical wraith.
"Baby go! Leonardo run!" She screamed before trying to kick away again, her strength returning as she got back to her feet and started running up the stairs before Mark tackled her from behind and her face collided with a step, world blacking out for the most part.
It was...upon awakening from that two days later, Leo still hiding from Mark and Mark off at work that she realized that what her naive little heart had proclaimed years ago was wrong. She'd all but finished packing her and her son's things before going to fix herself up in the mirror, tears rolling down her cheeks for a moment before she glanced into her cell phone for a moment and deleting a couple numbers. She'd leave it behind for now. Leave this all behind to find a better place for her and her heart. Everything was carried down to the taxi in one swoop, bags, momma, and baby before they drove out of sight and to where her heart was calling.
