A drabble for the
ar_drabbles challenge "write a drabble set during (or after) Daybreak that makes us laugh." I've already posted it there. If you haven't joined the comm -- well, why the frak not?
I am kind of surprised no one has yet commented on the title, though.
They sat under the tarp naming animals.
"Zareks," Laura said, pointing towards some prison-striped horses.
"Baltars," Bill named the long haired primates sitting on their butts, doing nothing.
"Gaetas." Laura handed him back the binoculars so he could look at the pink birds on the lake, each standing on a single leg.
A bird swooped down not far away, catching its prey and taking off again, leaving only the impression of a piercing eye and a fringe of white hair. "Sauls," they said at the same time, smiling.
They held each other's hand, enjoying the sunlight and the breeze they never thought they'd live to feel again. "What would you name after me?" Laura asked.
He stole a sideways glance at her. "Not much out there covered in plaid." If she'd had the strength, she'd have thwacked him. If she had the strength, she'd have laughed.
He took up the binoculars and looked around. "There. Those are my Lauras."
She took the field glasses from him. She saw a pride of large felines sunning themselves. Slender with long lean muscles, tawny manes surrounding noble faces. The animals around gave them wide berth, a circle carved of fear, deference, and respect.
