Summary: Mac has to deal with his actions which cause Stella to end up in hospital.
In a Little Time
It was one of those bleak, rainy days that New York was so accustomed to. Mac sat on the window sill, one eye on the patient and one eye on the bust street below. Stella made a small noise of displeasure as she moved restlessly, making the small cuts and bruises on her face move visible to him.
He felt tears burn in his eyes when he saw her lying there; tears he cried partly from the sadness the situation brougt and partly from guilt. He had sent her out there into the wild streets...alone.
"If you've got a problem, Stella, go fix it!" he had shouted in her face. She looked so hurt in that moment, and an odd fear entered into her eyes. Mac hated and cursed himself as he thought about.
"Fine," she replied, her head held high, her pride still firmly in place. Stella was never one to admit defeat.
Like a fool he had watched as she struted away, her brwon coloured curls bouncing slightly. He remembered how, although he was beisde himself, a profound feeling of admiration stirred within him.
It was Danny who had first alerted Mac to the fact that it had been an hour and Stella had not returned. Mac had called her mobile 5 times while aggitation ate away at him.
They had found her in an alleyway by a dumpster. Danny called for help, his voice going high-pitched and anxious. Mac had dropped his knees, his heart in his throat. "Stella?" he had called, though he knew she wouldn't answer him. He lifted her off the ground and craddled her in his arms, as his tears fell from his eyes and onto her face.
All he thought about on the ride over to the hospital was what he was done and how he could never live without her. They had been placed in dangerous situations before - but he had made her do it; she was out to prove a point to him!
'Mac,' she called, her voice hoarse.
He jumped up and ran to the bedside, taking her hand. Stella smiled up at, it seemed pained but it was genuine.
'I'm so sorry, Stel. I never meant -'
'Shh...'
Mac felt his tears running down his face. He pressed her hand to his face. 'If anything had happened to you, Stella...I would never have got a chance to say I love you.'
Her eyes lit up for a second and she yawned sleepily. She probably wouldn't remember much of their conversation with the drugs they had her on, Mac knew that. But, somehow, saying it to her now made him think he could say it again properly when they were both in better places.
He pulled a seat close to the bed and watched her sleep. Her chest slowly rised and fell, and he clasped his hands around hers.
For now, it was perfect and it was all he needed.
