Personality: Hong Kong is even-keeled and calm, or at least that's what his facial expressions might lead you to believe. He rarely emotes through his face, keeping a neutral expression most of the time. It's said that it's hard to know what he's thinking due to his lack of emotion. His expressionlessness also makes him seem a bit sleepy or somewhat apathetic sometimes. It seems like he is more emotive vocally, however (if his Hetalia Fantasia appearance is anything to go by). He talks rather quickly and seems to favor slang and informal speech (this is sometimes translated as "valley girl speak" though it's not my preference to do so). His speech patterns are those of a young person, fairly casual toward everyone with whom he's seen interacting, including his 'elders' (China primarily). In addition, he shows concern for how others dress and seems fashion conscious, which also contributes to the image of Hong Kong as a typical teenager.
Furthermore, he is pretty taken with gadgetry of all kinds, cellphones and related electronics holding a particular fascination for him. Taking into account the cutting-edge and modern atmosphere of Hong Kong the place, it's not hard to imagine that a proclivity for current fashion and the latest gadgets are not the only examples of Hong Kong the character's strong affinity for all things new and modern. Nonetheless, Hong Kong also holds onto a number of traditions that are ancient in origin, courtesy of the various nations that helped 'raise' him.
Hong Kong is one of many places in Asia where old meets new, but also a very important place where East meets West. Having been occupied by Japan and a colony of Great Britain, as well as part of mainland China (as an SAR), Hong Kong has been influenced by many different cultural sources. As a result, he speaks multiple languages (English and Japanese), as well as Chinese dialects (Cantonese being one of the area's spoken languages, alongside English) and observes a variety of cultural traditions. All this outside influence has left him a bit lacking in a strong identity of his own, such that many of his defining characteristics are adopted from others. One slightly humorous example of this is observable on Hong Kong's face at all times.
Thanks to a curse from England, he has rather noticeably bushy eyebrows, one of the physical characteristics that is consistent among many of the other Hetalia characters representative of former or current British territory. Hong Kong's eyebrows aren't quite as prominent as the other British colonies and territories, perhaps to compensate for the time he's spent out of England's hands. Occupied by Japan from 1941 to 1945 and having been returned to China as of 1997, it's easy to get whiplash trying to keep up with Hong Kong. He doesn't seem to have trouble though, continuously integrating the various aspects of his background into a seamless structure comprising all the different aspects of his heritage.
Hong Kong has undergone significant change since 1997, when the area was turned over to China again after half a century of British rule (Hong Kong is now partially autonomous, but retains its ties to mainland China in areas such as military defense and foreign relations). This action resulted in greater freedom for Hong Kong, which gives him more of a voice to share his thoughts-- despite the fact that he isn't a "real country" with legitimate claims to independence and he's only been able to become partially self-sufficient. The fact that he is so young in comparison to the other nations also contributes a little to a lack of respect, but he doesn't seem outwardly bothered by it (as he doesn't seem outwardly bothered by very much of anything).
His more mature, adult behavior can clash with his youthful approach to things, but as with other aspects of his life, it's just something he has to balance the best that he can.
Powers & Abilities: Hong Kong's one of those personified country types (though he's technically a city-state designated as a special administrative region) and, as such, he's a bit tougher than the average human. His health is affected by his economy, rather than natural, human factors (not really an issue on another planet, but useful to note) and he appears to be a teenager, despite being over 170 years-old. His affinity for kung fu leads me to think he has some experience in martial arts and could probably defend himself if need be.
He also speaks a variety of languages, including English, Japanese, Cantonese, and Mandarin Chinese.
What items will they be bringing with them to Discedo? The clothes on his back (which consist of a dark red duangua and brown pants) and a pair of chopsticks in hand. Why do you gotta interrupt a guy in the middle of lunch, scientists?
