How could it be too much to hope for, that California of all states would help lead the way to tolerance just as we elected our first African-American president?
Yesterday, in so many ways, was magic. I was dressed all in blue all day - from blue shoes to blue lip gloss to way too much blue glitter (my word of the day was "subtle.") But the best moment, the moment I'll always remember, is watching election results come in in my PJ's. I was on one side of the big white v-shaped couch in our den and my parents were on the other, curled up together under a blanket with champagne.
You may think they opened it early, but it was, after all, their 30th wedding anniversary.
And they are the reason I truly believe in love on such a fundamental level. More than anything, they are friends, partners, companions. They are such different people in so many ways, but together, they have been the best thing in my life for all my life.
And the idea that in California couples with that kind of love cannot get married because they happen to be the same gender breaks my heart, especially given the reasons against it that are listed. It's shameful that Proposition 8 passed. It's horrifying that all over the country, there are bills being passed that prevents these people from doing for children with nothing what my parents have done for me. And you can say "oh, the Bible says" blah blah blah. Yeah, one day you should maybe actually go read your Bible and see what ELSE it says people would go to hell for. You're probably just as much on your way as they are. Why not let them have happiness here?
This bill was defeated by a bunch of intolerant bigots using religion as an excuse to force their beliefs on others who weren't harming anyone, to promote hatred, to not think. To promote intolerance instead of love, the latter of which being what I always thought Christianity was supposed to be about.
