I hate forms, in fact, I'd go so far as saying that I'm a bit phobic about them since even straightforward ones almost always send me into a blind panic. Unfortunately, the tax form is like the Great White Shark of forms - not only is it fiendishly complicated, written in some strange and meaningless form of English but it's covered with dire

I empathise...

...I spent yesterday afternoon in the tax office trying for the fourth time to sort out a tangled cock-up involving the tax office thinknig I owedthem £34K in back tax...yes, that's thirty four thousand pounds...current bill is down to £4K but that's still wrong due to them putting in some years twice making it seem I'd paid half what I should.

I saw the same person I'd seen in 2005 who confirmed that they hadn't made the amendments I'd been intothe office twice before to rectify, so we'll see if they get done this time. Meanwhile she did at least get the Sefton Tax office to cancel the court summons for £4K that was due at the start of Feb...

...so, given my experience with the tac office, I thinkn you have reasonable grounds for fear and gibbering...

Do they not have tax prep software in the UK? Here, all you have to do is stick in a CD, answer all the questions (it thinks of the right ones to ask), and at the end it prints out a set of tax forms to send in (or else you can just file and pay or get a refund online). Completely painless (except for the taxes themselves, of course). I use TurboTax, but there are at least 3 or 4 other brands.
