today, the new york yankees played their final game in the always magnificent yankee stadium. jose molina hit the last home run. appropriately, andy pettitte started (& got the W, along w/ his 2000th career K), & mariano rivera closed of course (3 up, 3 down), even though it was a non-save situation. it would have been absolutely absurd to have had anyone but him throw the final pitch at yankee stadium. he ran out there just like he always does...getting the job done swiftly w/ all the grace & humility in the world. i got a little teary-eyed when "enter sandman" came on & thousands of flashbulbs went off, watching him run out there one last time. same for when derek jeter came out of the dugout for a curtain call, giving those thousands of screaming fans a grateful wave.
it's the first time in 13 seasons that the new york yankees haven't made it to the postseason, & they'll finish this season on the road. & they played that game as if it were game 7 of the world series. they were all smiles at the end of the game, & all they could do was thank their fans over & over, "the greatest fans in the world." i think it's pathetic that so many people think the yankees are a bunch of assholes...i simply think they are proud to play in those legendary pinstripes, & well, w/ the team's history, how could you not be? & yeah, if you were offered that kind of cash to play baseball for a living, you wouldn't turn it down either.
i understand that most (if not all) of y'all reading this will not care. but it's still my journal, & this is for me. also, today i realized i could never be w/ someone who (even if it meant nothing to them) could not understand why this game was emotional for me & important to watch. (& yes, i caught a fair amount of the cowboys game also.)
(i pondered disabling comments for this, but i changed my mind. i know there are no yankee fans reading this, & a few haters, but no negativity please. i'm feeling a bit, well...fragile.)

my dear friend chas is getting married someday soon. i have never been happier to hear about anyone's upcoming marriage as i was to hear about his.
