Warning: Friendship fic?
A/N: These two need more fics together.
“We’re not that much alike anymore.”
Junno already knew this. He just wanted to hold onto the friendship as long as he could. He honestly thought the other would revert to his old self. The Ohkura who would slowly laugh at Junno’s puns after he fully understood it. Junno missed the stages of Ohkura’s laughter. The tight-lipped smile that slowly spread across his face. The slight rise and fall of the shoulders and he tried to hide the laughter bubbling inside him before exploding with giggles. Not the Ohkura who would slightly glance from his cell phone and give him a strained smile.
“We’re not that much alike anymore.”
Junno knew this the third time Ohkura cancelled their plans to go drinking with his Kanjani band mates or on random dates with nameless girls. Sometimes Ohkura would even arrive late to their gaming nights, smelling of booze and cigarette smoke. Junno wasn’t entirely naive to the club scene, he just preferred the closeness of company at home. No camera phones. No eyes watching their every move. No reason to hold back from enjoying themselves. Ohkura obviously didn’t follow this anymore.
“We’re just not that much alike anymore.”
Ohkura announced this when Junno finally called him out on another broken promise of his company. Junno claimed that Ohkura was being a selfish friend. That’s when he busted out the line that caused them to avoid each other for weeks.
That’s why Junno was especially surprised when he saw the text message from the familiar cell phone number.
“Let’s get dinner tonight.”
--------------------------------
He looked tired, Junno noted. Tired and sad. Ohkura held out a cigarette in his direction and Junno wrinkled his nose as the two walked down the crowded sidewalk. “No thanks.”
“Do you mind if I-”
“Go for it,” Junno nodded, staring off into the distance ahead of them. He would have never imagined time spent with Ohkura being this awkward.
Ohkura gave him a small smile and dug in his pocket for a lighter until he decided against it. To Junno it felt as the two were starting over. Like they weren’t best friends once upon a time. It was like they had just met and this was their first outing together. He hated the feeling it gave him. Nerves were curling in his stomach and he inwardly grimaced. Ohkura used to be one of the people he felt most comfortable around. “We’re here.”
The two walked into the small diner and took their former usual spot in the back corner. This was the place they would always escape to when the stress of work became too much. Where Ohkura would drum his fingers along the table top while Junno tapped his foot along to the beat or where Junno would spin a new pun and Ohkura would laugh or even try his own hand at it. As the two sat down Junno realized it didn’t feel like a safe haven anymore. It was just a normal table.
He ordered his usual plate and Ohkura motioned that he would have the same. As soon as the waitress left, Ohkura rubbed his face roughly with his hands. He looked so very tired. “Does this feel weird for you too?”
Junno took a sip of his water to prolong his answer. The other waited patiently. “It’s been a while.”
“I don’t like who I am anymore,” Ohkura huffed, resting his chin on his hand.
Junno gave the other a thoughtful look. “Who are you now?”
“A bastard.”
Junno almost spit his drink out and had to cover his mouth. “What?”
“I’m a bastard. I am treating my friends terribly. Last week I,” he scratched the back of his ear uncomfortably, “I made him cry. He said I don’t treasure the relationships I have with him or others. And I thought of you. And I realized he was right. I’m sorry. I was distracted by the party life. And it is fun but it’s also exhausting. And it gets lonely.”
A response was interrupted by the waitress briskly setting the plates down. Ohkura and Junno simultaneously rubbed their hands together in anticipation and each noticed that the other was doing the same. Together they burst out laughing, causing the waitress to raise an eyebrow and quickly walk away.
“We are too much alike. I miss this. I miss goofing around with you like this,” Ohkura continued apologetically.
“Me too,” Junno gave him a nostalgic smile. “Now let’s eat.”
The drummer’s eyes lit up as he took a huge bite from his dish. “This is just as good as it was before.”
Junno grinned as he watched his friend act like had before. “It will be better.”
It would take a while, but he was hopeful regardless.
