Tutorial 01: Sheppard, requested by sgmajorshipper

~~First thing to know is this was made about 2 years ago (whoa!) so my style has definitely changed…you have been warned ;) And this is my first ever tutorial, so hopefully I didn't screw it up too bad? Also, any opacities that I haven't already stated are set at 100%

1. Take this image:

(ewww it's so gross and not colory and BLAH!) and place it where you want to (be more creative with your crop then I was puhlease!)

2. Duplicate your base and set that layer to overlay (brings out the colors and adds a lot more depth)

It's a lot less drab, yay!

3. Now duplicate the overlay layer again, but set it to screen at 73% opacity so that you know have this. It lightens it up a tad :)

4. Now I put a selective color layer on to boost the reds in the black a bit and bump up the green in the grass. The numbers I put in were :

Yellow:
Cyan: +70
Yellow: +4
Black: +50

White:
Cyan: -100

Black
Cyan: -11
Magenta: +35
Yellow: -1
Black: -6

Everything else was set to 0, and you get this:

5. Next thing I did was put a brightness/contrast layer on with the brightness being at 1 and the contrast at 31

6. Now I added a Vibrance layer with vibrance at +31 and Saturation at +14

7. This layer really goes to show how much my style has changed because I haven't used a gradient map layer since ummm…I don't even know when? I admit to having to go through and find a specific gradient map and trying to figure out how to save it which you can go over here and download the gradients I have and get it. You'll have to add it by putting a new gradient map (Layer>new adjustment layer>Gradient map).

Then where it shows the preview for the gradient, there's a little arrow pointing down, click that and it'll give the preview for all the gradients that you have as presets. Now go to the right of those and there's a little arrow pointing to the right, click that and go to the option "Load Gradients" and mingle over to where you downloaded the gradient and click open. There's going to be a bunch of gradients that pop up (because I faiiilll at life and couldn't figure out how to save only one gradient, eek!), scroll down to the bottom of your gradients and you should find one that's magenta and yellow like this:

(Or if you're super cool and can make that gradient yourself, have at it!)

Annnd after all that work you get this icon, yay colors!

8. Now add this texture:

(Maker unknown)

and set it to lighten 100% to get some blue added to the black:

9. Now, for whatever reason I wanted so white to the bottom left corner (don't ask me why I really have no idea :P) So take a white pain brush and on a new layer paint a circle in the bottom left corner right over the grass and set to soft light 100% and it'll lighten that area up a bit.

Which didn't really do much but yeaaahhh.

10. Now take this texture:

(maker unknown)

and set it to hard light at 79% and I get this:

11. And as you see the texture is over Sheppard and we don't want that! So I added a layer mask by going Layer>Layer Mask> reveal all, and over his face with a black paint brush I brushed away the texture so you can see his face so that you get this:

12. Then I took a brightness/contrast layer and put the brightness at 26 and the contrast at 14 and you get this:

13. Then I took this texture:

(Maker unknown)

set it to soft light 67% (which basically darkens everything) and you finally have this which completes it, yay!!

Looking back on this it's way oversharpened for my tastes (which there wasn't even a sharpen layer so that must have just been how the cap was especially once I added all the colorings and things) and not as glowy as mine are now.

If you have any questions or anything or if you want screenshots to see what I was doing, please let me know, not sure if I explained this exactly right or not :)
