First Day Back to School part 2

Aug 30, 2005 15:56

Well, I just got out of my African History class... I found it, walked in, then walked right back out to make sure I was in the right class... When I signed up for the class, I didn't really know anything about it and was a little concerned that I might be the only white guy in the class. (I'm not racist or anything, but black/white relations over the years certainly have had some bad patches, and I didn't particularly want to wind up being the only white voice in an afrocentric discussion.)The reason for my confusion is that there were probably about thirty people in the class, and I'd guess that maybe five of them are black. The professor is a very white, very portly gentleman who evokes shades of Colonel Sanders and Will Farrell's impression of Harry Carry, but not in an unpleasant way. He seems a decent fellow, but not exactly what I would have expected for a professor of African history. (Not that I was expecting Shaft or anything, but you know... Maybe a little more pigment.)

Now I have about 75 minutes to kill before the only class this semester that I think I may actually care about. I was a complete moron when scheduling classes, so I'm not really even sure what I'm taking for most of these, but I think this next class has to do with writing for the campus paper. While I'm not all that interested in becoming a newspaper reporter, I can always use the practice. Plus, my ego totally enjoys seeing my words in print, even if they're only in a school newspaper. I hope I can find a decent place in the paper and enjoy it... The class is only worth two credits, so I'm a little bummed about that, but it's two points closer to graduating.

Right now, I'm really wishing I had some fucking money to buy some food. There's a coffee shop right here in the library, which I have to say is a stroke of commercial fucking genius. I brought like two bucks in quarters from my car, hoping to find a vending machine, but no such luck so far. I'm about starving, having only eaten two pop tarts this morning before leaving. Ironically, I've only eaten two to four pieces of jellied toast for breakfast for probably the past month, but I'm still really hungry and will probably be even more so by the time I get home around 6:15. Stupid poverty...

While I'm on the subject, I'm getting pissed at my stupid fucking lawyer, Mark Kogan. I left him a message last week asking for an update, but he never got back to me. This week, his voicemail proclaims that he's on vacation. When we had my hearing, the judge said she would rule in 45 days, which just might fall while this guy is on vacation. I still have no idea if I have to appear again for the ruling or what the deal is there. It would be really nice to know what's going on, and I don't think an update every two weeks is too much to ask, especially since he's getting 20% of whatever I'm awarded. He's asking for about 34K, so that's no small fucking change. I worry sometimes that I'm somehow going to get screwed and get nothing, or worse, have to pay the attorney's fees for the other side. It would be in line with my luck, but I'm hoping all that has changed. If I don't get this money, I'm pretty well fucked...

I think this plan to hang out in the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays might be a decent one, especially if I can bring a couple of bucks to hit the coffee shop while I'm here. I had one of the resident computer geeks install a VPN client into my laptop so I can use the wireless signal on campus. I get a good, clean Net signal, though I seem to be unable to send email through Outlook for some reason. I suppose it could be a server-side problem, but I won't worry about it unless it's being goofy on Thursday also. At any rate, I was able to send mail through Comcast's web portal to get around the issue.

Bob has agreed to let me continue doing support tech stuff for him while I'm in school, so that works out well for me. At least I'm guaranteed a little income each week, though I hope he starts hooking me up with more parties soon. I don't particularly want to do a wedding every weekend, but it's better than trying to go to a part-time job every night for minimum wage and more headaches.

Speaking as a man who's engaged, I think I'm really looking forward to colder weather. There are a LOT of distractions walking around here. Copious amounts of baggy clothing lead to fewer distractions. I think that's about all I have to say on that matter...

I'm pretty well regretting my decision to take the Guru.com job I was offered... I'm writing a study guide for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix right now, I think I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through the book, which is huge. After I finish it, I still have to write guides for two other books, all before 10/15/05. I really should have been more agressive with it when I was doing nothing, but Steph has been off since last Wednesday, and I can't work with her around. She gets bored and pesty too easily and I like to curl up with the book in the living room with some music on. (Ahhh, Norah Jones... How you soothe me.) I'm not freaking out yet, but I don't really have time to screw around anymore, either. I only hope the other two books are a lot shorter. Stupid Harry Potter (which is turning out to be an enjoyable read, I must say) is over 700 pages long. The only bonus about that is that I get paid like an extra fifty bucks because the book is so damn long.

Anway, I'm off to surf before my last class of the day.
