Student guilty of sex attacks

A UNIVERSITY student partly financed by the Libyan Government has today pleaded guilty to attacks on seven victims, including a 13-year-old girl, weeks after arriving in the country.

Almahde Atagore, 28, carried out his sickening attacks at Flinders St and Mentone railway stations and outside the Mentone Hotel in a two-week sex spree.

Atagore, who required the services of a translator, looked solemn as the charges were read to him at Melbourne Magistrates' Court and he did not apply for bail.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge ordered him to appear in the County Court in two weeks time and again in May for a pre-sentence plea hearing.

Atagore, of Mentone, pleaded guilty to five charges of indecent assault and one each of assault with intent to rape and committing an indecent act on a child under the age of 16.

A previous court hearing was told Atagore, a Monash University student, attacked his victims, aged from 13 to 22, leaving them distressed and devastated.

The previous hearing was told the Libyan Government had awarded Mr Atagore a government scholarship that paid for his living and education expenses as a post-graduate English and accountancy student at Monash University, and took responsibility for him.

His lawyer blamed cultural differences.

While I'm not an anthropologist, I can't think of any cultures in the 'modern' world that think it's alright to sexually assault women and children.

I am aware of regimes that practice genocide by rape, but even they know it's wrong and only practice it during times of 'war'.

I understand that his lawyer is probably looking for any believable defense, but seriously...
